When I pulled it out, it sounded like one of those sizzling fajita skillets. Turns out the instructions on the back say to heat it 40 seconds to start, then in 5-second increments. Pffff. I vouch for the Zeppelin Method: Simply turn that microwave on and then walk away. Also works for popcorn!

Quite the adrenaline rush tonight as I peeked in the microwave and saw my heating pad turning into a zeppelin.

Cal-gry. Non-Albertans tend to put emphasis on the "gary." Cal-ga-ry (with equal emphasis on each syllable) may not immediately expose you as a tourist.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

I joined Twitter to find people to talk about old movies with, and in that respect, social media has done everything I hoped it could do.

Without the great people, I'd find little reason to do this anymore. Even with the great people, one suspects that there must be a better way to make community in this world.

I've met some fantastic people because of Twitter in particular (RIP). I've exchanged Christmas cards and mix CDs, letters and postcards, enjoyed socially-distanced film watching, wrote a few things, made a little money, constructed some crosswords. My friends have broadened my taste immensely.

Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?

Pals, tell me your favourite novellas. No larger project at work here—just looking for reads for the darkening evenings.

The Best Years of Our Lives is really a miracle of a movie for how beautifully it speaks to the moment in which it was made while keeping one eye open for how it can serve as a kind of historical record. It's so hard to tell stories directly about the immediate present, but it manages it.

They even call me Elvis. Or at least that's what it sounds like when my friends are shouting "SHELVE THIS" through the negotiator's megaphone.

Everybody loves it, except for the prudes who think it's too sexual to be shown on TV, where I appear frequently as the subject of local news reports.

Elvis Presley in a publicity still for Jailhouse Rock (1957)
Singer and actor Elvis Presley — in costume, dressed in a black-and-white striped shirt and matching black denim jacket and jeans — captured facing the camera while standing in front of a set of open prison cell doors, his knees bent, left foot on tiptoes, arms by his side as he looks off-camera with his mouth open, mid-thrust, in a full-length black-and-white shot for the film Jailhouse Rock (1957)

Believe me when I say that this would be the exact kind of national scandal we could make headline-worthy for, oh, two or three years at minimum.

Tragic news from Canada where the Canadian Supreme Court has gone from the official dress on the left to the one on the right
Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in bright red wooly gowns, with a beige trim. It looks sort of like a Santa robe The Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in black gowns with a bright white kravat, and two thin red vertical lines on the side of the robe

I presume they will be sending someone of equally weak arm strength.

I have never had any desire to wrestle anyone, but if a representative of HP Inc. wants to meet in the parking lot, I will be there at noon.

Came across this long-ago Frances McDormand interview (with Cameron Crowe) and found this gem:
