The Allies targeted Tokyo for Operation Meetinghouse in World War II because US intelligence knew most buildings there were made of wood and bamboo, so fire would spread quickly and would maximize civilian casualties (more civilians were killed in these attacks than in Hiroshima and Nagasaki).

That's why these takes are always dead ends; they are so abstract they don't tell us anything about how to operate in the world. How does having less clarity about our moral beliefs help us make a more just and equal world?

Outrage over 'Leftist purity tests' after 2016 ignored that centrists have their own purity tests and chide progressives for failing them. Pundits pretended they were having an abstract philosophical discussion about the idea of purity tests instead of just expressing their own policy preferences.

It's not just that he opposes basic human rights for trans folks (although that alone should be disqualifying). If someone is unable to clock the trans sports "issue" as a moral panic manufactured from thin air by reactionaries, I really have to question their powers of perception.

This is such a crucial rhetorical victory for the right, because it allows them to claim the rational centre no matter how radical their ideas are, and it compels many people to dismiss as 'radical' the most banal progressive positions.
