🚨 New police powers could ban face coverings at Pride protests even if you need to protect your identity because:

🔴 Risk of domestic abuse
🔴 You're not out as queer/Trans+
🔴 Fear of political views being made public

Health and disability reasons also won't prevent you getting arrested 🧵Here's why
Screenshot of QueerAF website with headline that reads: New police powers could criminalise wearing a mask at Pride. Picture that shows black and white women, wearing rainbow pride facemasks and carrying a bullhorn holding placards that read legalise LGBTI+ people worldwide

I know I should be neither shocked nor surprised at how the BBC news bulletins are being used to very clearly stir up anti-immigrant and anti-trans hate, but FUCKING HELL. The last two days' worth on Radio 6 have really felt like getting punched in the guts every hour. It's abhorrent.

Semi-regular reminder that if you want to understand and combat our current transphobic moment in the UK, then 'TERF Wars' from @notrightruth.bsky.social and many other incredible activists and academics is essential reading - and nearly all available for free: ruthpearce.net/books/terf-w...

I don't want to doubt this is real, but I've seen so many lies online over the years that I no longer just go, 'oh, OK' and accept what I see without question.

Regardless, I hope the person targeted can get some fucking peace and that transphobes will just stop with their violence and vitriol. /4
thefivetonine.bsky.social
If so, that the media:

4. Dedicates the same amount of time, resources and *ferocity* to share this account of events, and offers apologies and compensation for their part in stirring up and 'legitimising' even more transphobic hatred in this stupid little country 3/
thefivetonine.bsky.social
If so, that M&S:

2. Really was this supportive, and this person hasn't been directed to post a version of events online that shows colleagues and company in a kinder light than was deserved

3. Make their retraction of the initial apology to the transphobic customer known widely and publicly 2/
thefivetonine.bsky.social
This has emerged as the account of the employee targeted following the recent transphobic incident in a branch of M&S:

www.reddit.com/r/transgende...

I sincerely hope the following four things:

1. This really is the person involved, and that no one online has been low enough to fake this 1/

I have a piece in this quarter's Sonshine Magazine, in which I reflect on a boyhood that didn't lead to the manhood of my father's dreams.

If you're interested in writing that explores and encourages a better world for people raising sons (or trying to), check it out: sonshinemagazine.com
A photograph showing part of the illustrated front cover of issue 29 of Sonshine Magazine. Dark purple text is set against a light purple background. The front cover illustration is cropped, showing part of a figure that is, arguably, Cupid. A lilac face with mauve tousled hair looks off to the left of the image. At either side of the figure's face, you can see part of off-white feathered wings. The background to the image is a dark, dusty pink, and features two light red love hearts on either side, just above the visible part of the wings.

The text reads:

Sonshine Magazine: Raising boys for a more equal world.

Romance & Relationships:

Where do boys learn rules for romance?

How do we teach meaningful consent?

LitteLouCooks family recipes.

Friendship fun kids' pages: quizzes, puzzles & colouring.

Just been to see Weapons. It's great - a bit of a slow start, but things get tense and intelligent, with what I'm thinking of as a gentle squeeze of contemporary folk horror and a smidgen of small town gothic. Come for the vegetable peelers, stay for the Naruto runs. Go and see it on a big screen!
thefivetonine.bsky.social
I'm looking forward to sitting down with it later on! And I've been there - sometimes, it's hard to tell if one of the kids has been at something or one of the hounds... 😬

Overjoyed to make it to the letterbox before the dogs this morning to finally get my hands on a copy of 78 Acts of Liberation by @leftlanesmith.bsky.social. Omelette was clearly disappointed I snatched the parcel away before she could drag it under the sofa and chew it to pieces.
A photograph of '78 Acts of Liberation: Tarot to transform our world' by Lane Smith - this text appears on the cover in black, against an image of an abstract sun: a yellow centre with beams of red, orange, yellow, and light, medium and deep blue radiating outwards. The cover also reads: 'foreword by Maria Minnis, author of Tarot for the Hard Work'. The photograph is taken in front of a table cluttered with an open laptop computer, piles of books, jars of pens, lip balms, pebbles and pot plants; this background appears blurred.

I cannot for the life of me understand how news presenters on the radio can keep reading out the phrase 'the war in Gaza' and even pretend to take themselves seriously. What war?! It's a genocide, and every day I despair more that they fail to name it as such. I wonder if they feel shame about it.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: the EHRC's interim guidance is transphobic and harmful, and it must be stopped.

We will fight it in the courts in November. Will you join us?

M&S should pledge to support their trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming employees, and make it quite clear that transphobes are unwelcome in their shops. People should be desperately ashamed of their transphobic bigotry. Trans people should be empowered and protected in their workplaces.

Apropos of today’s news I just had a piece published in Radical Philosophy about the turn towards biological essentialism in law and policy. I’m arguing the SC decision in FWS and attempts to restrict disability welfare fundamentally come from the same place of wanting to limit state protections
