"Let's boil this down: AI for back office and admin tasks? Yes. AI for diagnostics and training? Perhaps, but we need to understand the impact on patient care."

This is great! Looking forward to reading.
Bridging this gap is what Indigenous scholars have been advocating for decades: calling for recognition of the value and legitimacy of bridging methodologies across disciplines AND worldviews to answer complex health questions.

Medicine has largely underutilized the power of humanities to advance scientific research.

In our piece, physician/historian @thelakshmik.bsky.social, @hls.harvard.edu student Kayla Z & I describe how this methodological bridging can strengthen scientific enquiry.

Mira por donde, siempre he pensado que soy un bicho raro y resulta que ahora sale en el JAMA que no es tan malo ser de ciencias y letras a la vez, cuando te dedicas a la medicina

This project was extra special as I got to work with two brilliant alums of Georgetown's Medical Humanities Initiative @vinayakjain.bsky.social (now a pulm fellow and MedHum rising star) & Kayla Zamanian (now a law student). Enjoyable, and mind expanding from start to finish. Thank you both.

Note: "Clinician-scholar" often means MD / DO + biomedical training. We're arguing for expansion: clinician + humanities as a vital formation. As someone who was a humanist before becoming a physician, I see & am grateful for the many humanists who've done foundational work on health campuses.

AI overlords, waning public trust, and funding/information outages demand we reimagine medical research. We NEED the interpretive skills, historical perspective & structural / contextual analysis humanities bring. Humanists are the OG translational scholars.

Always a treat to have @profgoldberg.bsky.social's take!

I am SO excited for this piece especially because it dramatically breaks with the “enrichment” model of #HealthHumanities.

The studia humanitatis have always been about rigorous research and scholarship - the humanists were early translational researchers!

Can’t wait to dig in.

Masks serve both power & resistance. ICE agents mask to avoid accountability or, if we take them at face value, protect themselves. Protesters mask to subvert surveillance. We wear them voluntarily & through compulsion. We hide behind masks, we survive through masks.
