Medicine has largely underutilized the power of humanities to advance scientific research.

In our piece, physician/historian @thelakshmik.bsky.social, @hls.harvard.edu student Kayla Z & I describe how this methodological bridging can strengthen scientific enquiry.

This project was extra special as I got to work with two brilliant alums of Georgetown's Medical Humanities Initiative @vinayakjain.bsky.social (now a pulm fellow and MedHum rising star) & Kayla Zamanian (now a law student). Enjoyable, and mind expanding from start to finish. Thank you both.

I am SO excited for this piece especially because it dramatically breaks with the “enrichment” model of #HealthHumanities.

The studia humanitatis have always been about rigorous research and scholarship - the humanists were early translational researchers!

Can’t wait to dig in.

This is great! Looking forward to reading.
Bridging this gap is what Indigenous scholars have been advocating for decades: calling for recognition of the value and legitimacy of bridging methodologies across disciplines AND worldviews to answer complex health questions.

A word of caution:

The humanities bring immense value to medicine (healing/education/research).

But beyond that, it holds intrinsic value of its own. It is critical we recognize this at a time when depts are under threat. For more on this, check out @shreedaisy.bsky.social's op-ed:

The gist:

Just as medical educators today employ pedagogical tools from humanities in teaching, researchers can employ methodological tools from the humanities to pursue novel lines of scientific enquiry & insights unattainable through solely biomedical frameworks.

Reconciling these two traditions comes with challenges. But also with strategic opportunities for academic medical centres. An illustrative ROI framework based on work at @gumedcenter.bsky.social MHI as below.

How can we make training less prescriptive & more reflective of the complexities & uncertainties of real practice?

An important wake up call!
There is so much at stake here for both our universities (including students/grads/faculty), and society at large.

Are you a health professions educator seeking to engage learners with structural determinants of health (SDOH) in a more meaningful manner?

If so, check out this special issue in the AMA Journal of Ethics on Critical Pedagogies edited by physician/historian Lakshmi Krishnan & I!

How coincidental I stumbled upon your post. I studied Sanskrit for 3 years in school. Recently decided to continue further after all these years. Hopefully I make some progress!
