So true, and it's taken me a ridiculously long time to figure it out.

You know something?

A party of 4 is my perfect comfort party size, TTRPG-wise, to run games for.

Any greater, and it bogs down scheduling, the pace of a game, etc, like mad.

4 is the magic number.

"Doorman's door repair services, 30% off with return of knife."
dicecompany.bsky.social
Your adventure begins when you find a note pinned to a tavern door with a knife 🔪 📝

What does the note say?

*silly answers only*

Well, they clearly know how to sell a game!

Reddit seems to think writing a world you are interested in running is somehow a turn off for players.

If that's true for them, I think they need different players. I love playing games with and run by folks who are excited about it.

PC's fighting literal Szass Tam, Archlich Tyrant of Thay, and complain that his spell DC's are high.

Buddy. He ain't just some mage.
themarconomicon.bsky.social
Hey, here's to all the responsible, dependable people out there. The ones that say what they'll do, then do what they say. The ones who listen before speaking, and speak only to those listening.

Y'all the real MVP's.

Scheduling really is the BBEG of collaborative gaming. Such a simple problem, such an insurmountable problem. Sigh.

I feel like such an old being the person to encourage my friends to just text me instead of DM'ing me on XYZ social platform, but like...I don't want to have to check every social platform to know if my friends wanna hang out?

Violence is inevitable when those in power abuse their power to consolidate their positions. It is the only answer to authoritarianism. It is, painfully ironically, why the 2nd amendment exists.

Yeah. I'd love to hear some MAGA gun nuts try to wrap their heads around that one.

Bailing is well and good. Trying to ruin other people's fun on the way out? Buh bye, and maybe fix your nonsense before you come back.

Players: that NPC was TERRIFYING! You must have worked really hard on that, they totally lived up to the hype!

Me: uhh...yeah! I definitely did not find an image 5 minutes before the game or make up their voice and accent on the fly. That'd be wild for such a central plot figure hahahaha 😅

Never, ever, under any circumstance, start up a whole ass campaign because you're feeling momentarily bored. Trust me, that shit will implode or drag you down.

Play campaigns you really want to, that you have time for, with people you enjoy.
themarconomicon.bsky.social
If there are behind the scenes plots moving things, I like to write down every major NPC's role in/attitude towards those plots, if any.

Helps me keep the thread going rather than get lost in world exploration 😅

And like... they wouldn't even be wrong, since the gods are real and so are their afterlife options. Sunny Olympia, with unicorns and pegasi? Eternal battle alongside countless comrades in arms in Ysgard? Endless nights by the river of life in Elysium? The options are legit lit.
themarconomicon.bsky.social
I imagine folks in settings like the Forgotten Realms have the religious equivalent of retirement planners come round to talk to all the middle aged commoners about their afterlife options.

"Have you chosen an eternal home? It's not too late to join the congregation of a major deity."

It was also weird at first to try to wrap my head around "science magic", but it was worth it. We're so pokemon-pilled that we need fireballs and lightning bolts to feel comfortable, but energy projection is actually kinda shallow compared to manipulating primary forces. Huge ups.

Cosmere is crazy deep. Idk how much of the background universe info is reader-facing, but the framework for building whole worlds with consistent theming is inspirational.

I thought my one world with structured themes was cool, but this is another dimension.

Done is better than perfect, posted is better than polished to death. That project sitting in your drafts while you "make it better" isn't helping anyone. Ship it and start the next one.

Ran probably my lowest "production value" online session in months last night--and the players raved about it.

Not a surprise per se, but it's always nice to affirm that a good game is more about content than bells and/or whistles.

Players: Can I pretty pretty please have enchanted plate armor and AC-boosting magical boons?

Also Players: Wow, none of these level-appropriate monsters can hit me. Boring!

Also also Players: What?! How are we fighting THAT monster at this level? That's so unfair!

🤦

Two and a half years ago, a player played in three paid sessions of mine and then had to leave the campaign because life.

This week, after all this time, they tracked me down and asked if I had any open spots. And remembered every single one of my homebrew rules.

I'm so ridiculously flattered.

I think the most nefarious evil is that perpetrated in the name of good, by people who wear the outfits and occupy the roles that are responsible for good.

Villains in all black with evil smiles and skulls for symbols are cute by comparison.

I long for the day when this kind of issue is at the forefront of American politics.
