Hey everyone! For those who might not be familiar with our work, The Overhead Wire is a daily newsletter that's been sending since 2006. We go through about 1,500 news items on cities each day and pull out the most interesting ones and tag them by topic and city for our link archive. (1/x)

I saw my first Mercedes Econic garbage truck in Newcastle the other day and was so excited! This is the kind of vehicle we should be demanding in Canada to stop the killing of pedestrians and cyclists. Canada has hewed to the USA safety standards, but now is the time to go our own way.
Canada should make side guards on trucks mandatory; the usual excuse no longer works
Now that we are plotting an independent course from the USA, it’s time to develop our own safety strategies and standards.

Just when I thought I’d gotten a real understanding of the ingredients of good urbanism, @theoverheadwire.com interviews Mary Pat McGuire about the literal ground our cities are placed upon.

Grey spaces vs green spaces, such a novel thought to me. Highly recommend a listen!

Book report: To address climate change and traffic violence, we desperately need more everyday citizens to work together for positive change. @carterlavin.bsky.social's book is the perfect how-to guide for anyone to translate their rage or hope into strategic action. Highly recommended

The inspirational bit at the end is good, but I’m also glad to know that Jane Goodall had a burn list.

Dr. Jane Goodall filmed an interview with Netflix in March 2025 that she understood would only be released after her death.

Do not miss the fact that it is only transit projects getting funding frozen and not highway projects, despite the fact that on pure costs alone, far more FHWA project money is flowing to DBE contractors!

This situation is patently absurd: US DOT claims that New York City & Chicago's transit projects need to be put on ice because they developed DBE goals *in line* with federal policy.

Now the Trump admin says they don't like the federal policy—and it's New York City & Chicago's fault, apparently.

New #TalkingHeadways! We chat with Adele Houghton and Carlos Saltillo-Salgado about their new book Architectural Epidemiology - link.theoverheadwire.com/ayte3 @usa.streetsblog.org Turns out just doing one LEED building won't make the neighborhood healthy or sustainable.

Architects just checktheboxes on a LEED checklist. But it's time to pay attention to stuff outside the property line, too.

an anti-transit mayor who defunded affordable housing and only cares about the demands of landowners

Confirmed: SDOT will be removing the bus only lane on E Union Street this weekend, ceding this part of the $130 million RapidRide G project back to general purpose traffic in response to requests from nearby property owners.
