If that doesn't happen, I'll feel way more optimistic about making it through 2025-26 without h5n1 becoming transmissible enough to cause a pandemic in humans.

My predictions remain what they were. The next milestone on the timeline is November into early December 2025. Best case scenario is that we get through that month without h5n1 making a widespread leap into pigs. If that does happen, then we'll continue to be on watch for a human pandemic in 2025-26

I'm still keeping an eye on h5n1. Even though most folks have stopped talking about it, there are outbreaks in poultry in Wisconsin, Iowa, Virginia, and Nebraska. Ireland is also having a pretty bad poultry outbreak.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections
