CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962): a great study of mood and tension. mary knows something is just... off, but no one will listen or understand. great acting, shot composition, and score. an underrated nightmare!

🔴 In two years of war, over 223 Palestinian journalists have been killed in #Gaza in the deadliest period in the history of journalism. As journalists, unionists and, ultimately, humans, we cannot accept that reporters are killed amid indifference, be that in Gaza or elsewhere.

WHITE OF THE EYE (1987): part southern gothic horror, part American take on the super stylistic giallo. really weird and thrilling, and hits on the disorienting violence of domestic masculinity that's as satisfying as THE SHINING. also on Tubi/Plex.

Zelda Williams has asked people to stop sending her AI slop videos of her father Robin Williams:

"You’re not making art, you’re making disgusting [stuff] out of the lives of human beings .. [and] art and music"

WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (1979): this one gets a bad rap! the film is bookended by suspenseful horror, while the meaty middle is more police procedural. a fun tonal shift grounded by excellent performances.

sunday's pick is FROM BEYOND (1986), which is more of a sexy, cosmic horror, akin to HELLRAISER. very goopy and practical-effects heavy, so maybe wear some goggles.

it's the weekend so i'm posting both saturday and sunday's picks today as a stuart gordon double feature.

first up is RE-ANIMATOR (1985): a fantastic, lovecraftian "mad scientist" film.

A loud sigh of lamentation: Rest in Pandemonium to Nobuo Kubota of CCMC, great Toronto artist of sound and vision, 1932-2025.
From a recent exhibition at MOCA Toronto, a work of Nobuo Kubota's showing three rows of three pictures of his grey-haired face, pink and half-transparent, with his mouth in various positions and expressions of sound-making.

BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974): a halloween staple of mine and a toronto classic! incredible slasher with a great sense of humour and gender politics.

EVIL DEAD II (1987): one of my all time faves. more of a second iteration than a "sequel," this really finds the sweet spot where "over-the-top" in comedy and horror intersect, and does it w/ incredible style, shot composition, and movement!

PULSE (2001): i watch a lot of horror and found this one to be genuinely unsettling. exploring isolation and the permeable boundaries between life and death. a minimal, slow burn and not something that's going to bat you over the head with jump scares.

i appreciate trolling in these contexts when they also have a point. like when chris weingarten included skrillex on a list of the best guitarists of all time. i'm not sure what point they're making here tbh!

i hope that's what it is! i took a deep dive on tiktok into all the gen z's (re)discovering mp3 players, soulseek, torrents, and home media servers, and have been inundated with spotify ads ever since... they might be flailing in more ways than one.

I’ve got new music coming on November 4th! It’s an EP called PROFESSIONAL, and it’s about friendship breakups.

I worked really hard on it (in the studio and in therapy), so it would really mean a lot to me if you would support me on Bandcamp!

i dunno, reading the details, he's still remaining as "executive chairman" with quite a lot of power and influence on the direction of the company.
