It Hunts You was an old experimetal horror game I made for a Haunted PS1 jam. I wanted to emulate those awkward, very early first person games, letting the monster feel otherworldly by not being bound to the same technical constraints as the rest of the world.

Wait, you mean people create things of value when they aren't desperately clawing for baseline sustenance?

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

They've all rolled 1's! You've cursed the timeline! Cursed!

I liked Brigador's approach to this. Mechs are expensive and difficult to maintain, but top brass saw a presentation of one sticking it's foot through a tank and threw money at it.

The rise of flat design is a curse we all suffer

There are a couple of... questionable lines in there too.

A quality tactile experience, mostly. I have digital versions of a lot of games, and was in the process of setting up MIRU in TRS, but sometimes it's nice just get something physically in front of you, feel the peices, move them around.

Particularly notable weird mechanics that add so much to the feel of it:
Ammo DRM on the mass-produced rifles.
Holding a sentry gun and manually firing it.
Frag (hell energy) possessing corpses. They don't stay dead. This is fun in coop.
Breaching charges, fall damage,
Ladders, mantling, diverolls.

In a general sense with political roles, if honourable people follow the rules, and honorable people resign, who are you left with?

Everyone should rewatch Farscape.

I'm finding in my home games we're jumping in without deep backstory, assuming vague relationships (oh you were a guard? Maybe you arrested me after a barfight and we became unlikely friends) and feeling things out as we play, learning about the characters as we go. Quicker, easier more flexible.

Nice evocative monoliths!

The hex kit is very tempting. I haven't gotten round to playing a proper game of MIRU yet, but if I like it I'll be grabbing one!

It's a rabbit hole, enjoy!
The excellent @mistericarus.bsky.social posted a scathing video of it, then this great follow up learning to love and overcome its challenges. youtu.be/vCKHwu_wQAw?...

My favourite way to play is with the addon Ugly as Sin, which among other things can reduce the number of supplies in a level, forcing you to scavange. And then I play as the Doomed Guy. No armour. No gear. Just a pistol. Claw your way out of hell.
thesnee.bsky.social
Physical attacks cause bleeding. Fire burns and needs to be extinguished. Without armour a single bullet might kill. More powerful demons use balefire. There's *fall damage*. The odds are so heavily stacked against you.
It makes every little bit of progress you make, every room cleared so satisfying
thesnee.bsky.social
Taking the Deprived example even further, I love the Doom mod Hideous Destructor. It turns the fast run and gun of Doom and makes it slow paced and very deadly. You're not the hero, you're just a grunt, and while the weapons you can use are powerful, the demons you fight are beyond lethal.

I think it applies in a lot of places, even passive media where we root for the underdog. How many super powered shows have a protagonist with a "weak" ability that they somehow manage to use to defeat the strongest of opponents?

Some great discussion by @alfredvalley.bsky.social about how fun working with sub optimal stuff can be in games. Even if its not "good", taking something weird and just making it work can be very rewarding. open.substack.com/pub/alfredva...
