I think if a AA studio got like 5-10 million dollars to make a really polished "supermarket simulator" type game, it would do numbers.
thomasthecat.bsky.social
And it doesn't even have to be random! Like, just trying out a scifi book that's still wildly popular but isn't part of the "Star" franchises, can be a refreshing experience.
thomasthecat.bsky.social
But just like with restaurants, sometimes it's worth taking the risk on the mom and pop diners and dive bars because that's where you find something that has a bit of pride and ownership and rawness that you might not expect.
thomasthecat.bsky.social
Like, with a big IP, we assume any new "official" entry has to meet a minimum quality bar, and at the very least if we don't like the overall thing, it's still going to have elements we know we'll like. It's like ordering at a fast food restaurant. It's about consistency more than quality.
thomasthecat.bsky.social
Trying to force myself to look outside of mega mainstream IPs - yes I love those worlds, but there really is a lot of fantastic stuff out to discover. I think there's a sunk cost fallacies on big IPs and we're worried about the "risk" of "wasted" time on new things if we don't like them. (cont.)

Trying a little something new, would you believe this took 3 days to render?

Actually the Olympic isn't done yet! Miranda, Connie, Nova, Saber. :)

Props to @pundus.art and @scorpiondesign.bsky.social who did a lot of work to get this Gladius remaster in good shape. With this remaster, all of the variants of the Saber family are now up to our quality bar. This makes the Saber family the fourth fully-remastered family of starships complete!

Coming soon to #StarTrekOnline , the Gladius-Class has been remastered to our current visual standard, and as usual, this will be free for any owners of the Gladius Escort Refit and usable on any ship in the Escort (Saber-Class family)!

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Many listeners has brought up @daytonward.bsky.social new book coming out on Feb. 17th 2026. In my last episode talking about the Crushers, one listener said “WHERE IS JACK?!” — where Jack Crusher is missing but Wesley is not! Who else is excited about this book? 🙋🏻‍♀️ #StarTrek #StarTrekPicard #Podcast

The last page of the article. Donny Versiga made the TMP Enterprise warp core, and the TNG Dilithium Crystal assembly was modeled by me using 3DS Max and rendered with VRay.
The final spread of the "From Marvick to Brahms" article. On this page there is an image of the Enterprise's warp core from Star Trek: The Motion Picture and an image of the Dilithium Crystal articulation frame as depicted in Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual

First interior page of the article. The image of the TNG warp core is from STO. The TOS warp core is work by Donny Versiga. I did the Warp Core diagrams with guidance from my friend Andy Presby.
First interior spread of the "From Marvick to Brahms" article. It has images of a warp core from Star Trek: The Next Generation, the engine room from Star Trek: The Original Series, and a comparative diagram of how different kinds of warp engines might work.

The article was published a month before the launch of the Enterprise-D. In traditional POPULAR MECHANICS fashion, some details are omitted or altered for brevity or national security. ;)
First page of the INTERSTELLAR MECHANICS article "From Marvick to Brhams." The spread photo is an image of the first six starfleet starships named Enterprise from the NX-01 to the "new" Galaxy-class NCC-1701-D. The subtitle of the article is "Making the Galaxy a Smaller Place."

I used this image as the opening spread for an in-universe article about the Enterprise-D's propulsion system published in the 24th century magazine INTERSTELLAR MECHANICS. I co-wrote this article with one of my good friends who is an actual rocket scientist. Here is the "cover" for the magazine. 🧵
Cover of the INTERSTELLAR MECHANICS magazine that features the article "From Marvick to Brahms." The image shows constellations of the Star Trek characters Marvick and Brahms, with schematic drawings of the TOS Enterprise and TNG Enterprise.

Happy future launch day to the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-D. Model credits in the alt text of the image.

The Hired Steel folks did a supercut of all their episodes and it clocks in at 22 minutes of amazing robot-on-robot-on-tank action. I think this is a great look at how cool #Battletech is as a setting and a vibe. Even if you're not a BT fan, you'll have a ton of fun!
