It's been wonderful - & heartbreaking - to meet so many lovely Altadena and N. Pasadena folks who've been affected by the Eaton fire. Thank you for sharing with a bear...

Also, thanks to folks who were out to help - LA Co. Public Health, Red Cross, Army Corps of Eng., CA Nat'l Guard, and more.
Met this Bear while protesting to save the wildlands of Chaney Trail last autumn. The trail was incinerated last month. But its chaparral will grow again. And the Bear, like its native wildland, is standing strong. Thank you, dear friend Bear. #DenaStrong

December 5th is Krampusnacht in the #Alps
During this night, the devilish Krampus - a half-man & half-goat demon - leaves his cloven hoof-prints all over the rocks, as he jumps from peak to peak 😈

PSA for the fellas:

Every woman you know has been in a room with a Pete Hegseth (sometimes drunk, sometimes not) who raged at her for not being instantly charmed by, or acquiescent to, him—like Hegseth rages at reporters—and had to do a quick calculation about getting out safely. And a lot didn't.

I actually think the genAI thing is showing us who wants to be scientists and who wants to be perceived as being scientists.

There's been a similar thing with writers and artists....
Imagine: If we had a crystal ball that tells us what are the discoveries to be made, we wouldn't have to do science in the first place.

Apparently that's some scientists' scientific ideal. Rather than doing science. So many weird ontological and epistemic assumptions to unpack.

Today is the first of 25 days of #Crustmas! Post as many crustaceans as possible! (not just crabs) 🦑🧪

This year I'm less personally inclined towards "crabs are the ultimate form", and my piece below explains why.

PS all posts will be right here on the crab feed 🦀

Crab Memes Amplify Mistaken Ideas about Evolution
Memes about repeated evolution of crabs have been co-opted to joke about technology and “ultimate forms.” They’re hilarious, but they oversimplify natural variation, giving bad arguments a scientific ...

On the 2nd day of #Crustmas, my Georgia coast gave to me, a coastal-dune-dwelling isopod, making tracks! Trackmaker is probably Armadillidium vulgare (nicknamed "pillbug" or "roly poly"), with special guest tracks made by much bigger ghost crabs (Ocypode quadrate), on Sapelo Island, GA. 🦀🐾

It is vital to assess the mechanisms and mythologies behind why the news has largely ignored this and why, e.g., the Democrats have supported building much of this infrastructure. I discuss it in depth in Copaganda, with all royalties donated to anti-surveillance charity. bsky.app/profile/equa...
I just received the first copy of Copaganda! It will be sold anywhere books are sold. I try to explain the role of the media, the police, and academia in how we got to this authoritarian moment.

The first thing we always did when we were looking for a house in Iowa City was to look at the floodplain maps - at the time Zillow did not provide this info. Not having this as readily accessible will make harder for people who do not know how/where to look for this info to make informed decisions.
Realtors know that, in many parts of the country, if you educate people about climate risk, the housing market will collapse.
