Yes. All the empirics on misinformation indicate that the way to defeat bad ideas is to mock and marginalize them. Constantly declaring "hey the far right isn't so bad" is a terrible strategy both morally and electorally.

Progressives really hope, and maybe even believe, that there is some magic thing they can hijack to attract conservative voters.

I found this piece sad too, but mostly because it is part of a years-long effort by progressives to understand what "really" animates Trump voters.

The politics of the left should be about making people's lives better regardless of their views and politics. That doesn't mean that we stop recognising and confronting racists, transphobes, homophobes, sexists etc.
I think there are better uses of energy than trying to "reclaim" a toxic flag.

It is easy to forget how the mid 90s Tory government was basically scandal after scandal. Death orange, toe sucking, cash for questions, Jerry Hayes' outing, Lamont's sex therapist, Norris affairs, Aitken's lies and Alan Clark's diaries. Major managed his affair in secret mind.
