Kind of disappointed you didn’t sneak a copy of this in between those two books.

Good to see “Foxy” 😉 still lives on.

Released on this day forty years ago, "Rain" by #TheCult was the second single from their second studio album, "Love".

It reached 17 on the #UKSinglesChart and is a #gothclub mainstay to this day!

As timinwinchester, I thoroughly approve of this.

A superb article about the invidious inconsistent nature of academia's approach to AI:
“This threatens fundamental academic values, but teach it to your students or they will suffer."
and
"it would be wrong to copy somebody else's material; but we want you to use AI to copy somebody else's material"

My latest column for the Chronicle of Higher Ed is now live. It's an argument for including AI-critical voices in campus conversations and policymaking workgroups, and I'm proud to get this dissenting piece into the mainstream genAI/higher ed discourse. Please read and share if you're so inclined 🙂
Advice | Sometimes We Resist AI for Good Reasons
Why higher ed needs to listen to the contrarians in setting policies on using tools like ChatGPT in faculty work.

And this is why I cover my backpack with a hi-vis waterproof cover (and also, although not tested in this study, why I have daytime flashing riding lights). #cycling

There’s definitely a Rorschach test in there.

This is a beautifully nuanced reflection on the degree to which effective use of AI requires the user to generate the right question, design a decent prompt, and then evaluate the answer (and perhaps further iterate the prompt).

It doesn’t work to just offload “thought” to the AI model.

“AI intensifies rather than innovates”
benpatrickwill.bsky.social
Claims of the novelty of AI and its potential for innovation in education always make me wince a bit because really it continues a bunch of long-running tendencies in the sector. It’s an *intensifier* rather than an innovation. Some examples… www.forbes.com/councils/for...

There are some good recommendations in y/day's Select Cttee report. Until curriculum flexibility and accountability is sorted, there's a risk that SEND practice is inconsistent with other drivers to which schools must respond.

Excerpt from para 36 of report's recommendations:
* the curriculum must be flexible, relevant, and reflect the representation of young people with SEND; and the Government must ensure the curriculum itself and the assessment of it reflect and accommodate their needs;
* accountability systems must examine and prioritise the progress and outcomes of all pupils, on a rounded set of indicators which include but are not limited to academic attainment, so that inclusion is embedded as an essential component of quality for all settings. The proportion of pupils with SEND should be published and compared with other local schools and multi-academy trusts, to act as a disincentive to exclusionary practices

A really great read about the tyranny of the "word gap"; like a "zombie statistic", it refuses to die, despite its troubling & misleading origins. The article reminds me of www-tandfonline-com.soton.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.... which shows how such thinking plays out in practice.

Drives me bananas. Somebody drove into my car while it was stationary in a car park, and now I have to declare it each time I renew my insurance.

Thoroughly agree. We do ourselves and our learners a massive disservice if we scaffold things too much.

Ooh. My students are currently exploring the “tension” between cognitive load theory and desirable difficulties. I’ll be passing this on…

One third of parents have asked for SEND assessments.
This is not about individual children, teachers or schools but about a systemic problem.
Desperately hoping for some wisdom and relief from the SEND review.

There’s a lot of stuff said about self-care and managing work related stress.
But it really is pretty straightforward.

How to avoid stress at work:
1. Don’t go to work
2. Go cycling

I was talking to someone recently whose company is likely to bid for the eLORAN contract. Amazing to hear how just a few long range transmitters can help build up UK resilience.

Oh, the rich life of an #academic. I've just been invited to join a tour of the "Knitting Reference Library Collection" in an allied university. I'd dearly love to go, but have teaching commitments that pm.
I've already warned my students that I may be slightly grumpy and distant that afternoon....
