the World Cup. In that scenario Obed joins already midseason form, maybe coming off of a shining display in the World Cup, as ready as he could be to impress whatever club has brought him in. Honestly, Obed staying in Seattle for the time being and moving in the Summer is probably best for all.

Yes, they could sign a pre-contract and have him join next Winter for free. Obed probably gets whatever the fee could have been as a signing fee, but the preseason, immediate contribution stuff remains. They’d likely still be willing to pay up to $3M to have him join for their own preseason after

playing with El Tri this Summer. It wouldn’t make much sense for him, but also the teams looking for Winter signings in his position probably aren’t going to go for a player in their preseason.

On the flip side, the thinking around those Big Clubs is still true in the Summer.

in the Winter are mostly either adding depth or looking for relative emergency reinforcements. Depth or desperation, neither of which is a great situation for a player in their preseason who needs to be playing real minutes ahead of the World Cup. If he stumbles at all after a winter move he’s not

A move this window, maybe with a loan back to the Sounders until the Summer, would have made plenty of sense from a Seattle(fan) perspective. It’s clean and straight forward. But a winter move for a player like Obed going to Europe doesn’t really make much sense. The kinds of teams signing CMs

I think a lot of what @jeremiah.sounderatheart.com has said about the idea that any big clubs supposedly interested in him on a free would also likely be interested in a minimal fee to get him “now” is still true, but I think by looking through out Rave Green glasses we missed a lot of context.
