For those folks posting about South Korea's angry response to Trump's ICE raid on Korean companies in Georgia, this interview & post from me helps explain why: in part, national PTSD from 40 years of military dictatorship. I've covered Korea since 1980. 🌺

My interview with BBC about Trump's ICE raid on the Hyundai/LG plant in Georgia
I spoke to the Beeb's Business Report this morning about the South Korean response to the raid and the anger ICE has generated. They wanted to emphasize what the Koreans did wrong, but I persevered.

1/ Is Chosun Ilbo becoming a MAGA mouthpiece? Today South Korea's biggest conservative paper made its top headline an essay deifying Charlie Kirk, complete with warnings about "radical-left dictatorships", framing the US-ROK alliance through shared Christian faith. t.co/rZFnWXVuzc by Raphael Rashid

Killing Article 9 is likely to be a high priority for Takaichi. Without Komeito to restrain LDP, they might get greedy and and insist on more than authorizing SDF—which could work against them. A Komeito out of the coalition might be freer to stand foursquare against militarism.

Dodger fan, btw. Ohtani is the Babe Ruth of our time. Plus I love LA. My parents are buried there. We're all still around, my sisters and I.

George Carlin would never have taken blood money to perform comedy for a Saudi Arabian tyrant.

True - but there have been US administrations that admonished the LDP for its visits to Yasukuni Shrine. Abe changed that overnight.

Japanese far-right historical revisionism was never a flashpoint for the USA. Americans were the ones that sabotaged the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal because they needed the war criminals and far-right Japan for their hegemonic status in East Asia.

NYT plays down the fascism. Why isn't this a flashpoint for the USA? "Takaichi argues that Japanese atrocities during WWII have been overstated. She regularly visits Yasukuni Shrine, a memorial honoring Japan’s war dead & war criminals & a flashpoint for historical sensitivities in China & Korea."

"Takaichi to become Japan’s first female prime minister"
On the one hand, I'm glad Japan's "glass ceiling" has been broken. On the other, the shift to the hard right we've seen elsewhere has reached Japan. I hope her term in office is short.

Genius at the Opry 😂

OTD 1954 Elvis Presley makes his one and only appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, where he sings "Blue Moon Of Kentucky." His Rockabilly version doesn't go over well with the crowd. Elvis remembered the Opry manager advising him to “go back to Memphis and drive a truck.”

GUARD IN MEMPHIS: The TN Supreme Court & a federal court have both ruled it is unconstitutional for TN’s governor to deploy the National Guard for law enforcement.

In 2021, TN’s GOP Attorney General wrote an advisory saying the same. It was so damning, the new AG secretly erased it from record!

“War is just wrong." A friend from my youth in Japan sent me this note after she saw my article on the US firebombing of Tokyo. I wish the world had learned never to repeat the devastation of World War II, but the US-Israeli genocide in Gaza shows the exact opposite. substack.com/@timshorrock...
