When I think back to my favorite childhood memories I’m pretty sure most wouldn’t happen in today’s world with ubiquitous phones and social media.

Although I do think we have lost something irrecoverable, the world is not going to go back, the question is how do we go forward?

Kevin Kelly's slideless TED talk on AI in 2016 is has aged exceptionally well.

Four things he touched on that are still worth contemplating as we build the future we want to live in:

1/ In technology we often talk about the possible when we should talk more about the probable.

As the pace of change has accelerated and technology like social media and AI have rippled out to influence more things, the cost-benefit equation has changed.

Things AI can’t do:
Play pickleball with you.
Drive you to the hospital.
Watch a sunset together.
Go on vacation and ride a zipline.
Give you a hug.

AI is an incredibly powerful tool, but it can only simulate real friendship.

We are social animals and conversation alone isn’t enough.

Social media isn’t just escape or staying up to date. If we don’t create hard boundaries it steals our most finite non-renewable resources: our time and attention.

So delete apps, use app blockers and turn off visual/audio/haptic notifications. Your brain, friends, partner and kids will thank you.

1/ 99% of life is showing up. Not just your presence, but your attention and proactiveness.

Notice who shows up.
Notice who lingers.
Notice who helps without being asked.
These are the people saying “I’m looking for this too".

Coffee with friends knocks AI off the top position on the #1 online board for hardcore tech builders 👀

This says a lot about our deep hunger for social connection…

@noahpinion.bsky.social take on @ezraklein.bsky.social’s new book Abundance is 🔥, progressives are badly in need of a philosophical reboot.

We should be focused on outcomes not methods, especially when almost everybody is beating us on outcomes!

Skype is shutting down on May 5.

I remember living abroad when Skype went mainstream.

It was such a gamechanger to stay connected to friends and family back home, esp with the high cost of pre-VOIP intl calls.

I'll also miss the unique little bloop bloop sound it would make when dialing #RIPSkype

1/ Aging is not only about how long we live, but how well we live.

Lifespan is intertwined with healthspan, whether we’re talking about new protocols, therapies, habits or our relationships.

The max speed of commercial flight since the birth of airplanes:
1920-30s 160 mph
1950-70s 600 mph
1970-Present 650 mph
Starting in 2026: 1,400 mph

For 50+ yrs the speed of travel has barely moved, not counting Concorde for the super rich.

Boom flying at supersonic speed without a boom is huge👏

What we design, designs us back. This is especially true for the people we surround ourselves.

Don’t let circumstances determine your friendships, because the best way to create new habits and grow is to be intentional about who is in your life.

Here are three easy ways to design your 2025: 🧵

Reading history is like traveling to foreign countries, it stretches your mind.

And reminds us that what we think is certain may be transitory.

Live in many times.
