How much do you spend monthly on Netflix, Spotify, substack etc? $20? $100?

Now ask: how much do you give to support your local club, group or IRL space?

If you love a community, don't just consume. Help keep it going with funds, time, stuff or your talent!

The quality you get out of life is asymmetric to the energy you put in.

Be dependable: Show up more
Be curious: ask better questions
Be proactive: don’t just attend, participate and gather
Be grateful: thank your friends, fuel them.

Life is short, don’t coast!

1/ I wasn’t going to comment on the Elon vs. Trump showdown. But the algorithm had other plans.

Here’s my hot take:
Sevenn
Sevenn connects you to friends in new ways and helps you do more of the things you love. See who else wants to do things on your list and discover new places to go.

1/ We're not just living in the AI era—we're being reshaped by it.

Technology influences our cognition, behavior and society in profound ways.

Like social media before it, artificial intelligence will rewire our habits and perceptions. This future is already unfolding.

ADHD diagnosis rates among kids has steadily risen for three decades from 3% to 12%. Most are prescribed Adderall or Ritalin and many continue to take into adulthood.

If I had a band, I’d probably call it “Jevons Paradox.”

(Check out the hashtag #JevonsParadox if you’re not sure what that is.)

What would YOUR band name be?

When I think back to my favorite childhood memories I’m pretty sure most wouldn’t happen in today’s world with ubiquitous phones and social media.

Although I do think we have lost something irrecoverable, the world is not going to go back, the question is how do we go forward?

Kevin Kelly's slideless TED talk on AI in 2016 is has aged exceptionally well.

Four things he touched on that are still worth contemplating as we build the future we want to live in:

This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social

1/ In technology we often talk about the possible when we should talk more about the probable.

As the pace of change has accelerated and technology like social media and AI have rippled out to influence more things, the cost-benefit equation has changed.

Things AI can’t do:
Play pickleball with you.
Drive you to the hospital.
Watch a sunset together.
Go on vacation and ride a zipline.
Give you a hug.

AI is an incredibly powerful tool, but it can only simulate real friendship.

We are social animals and conversation alone isn’t enough.

Social media isn’t just escape or staying up to date. If we don’t create hard boundaries it steals our most finite non-renewable resources: our time and attention.

So delete apps, use app blockers and turn off visual/audio/haptic notifications. Your brain, friends, partner and kids will thank you.

“The bottleneck of the digital age is different: The new era is killing us softly, by drawing people out of the real and into the virtual, distracting us from the activities that sustain ordinary life, and finally making existence at a human scale seem obsolete.”

1/ “What is the best model for X right now?“

This is increasingly the apex question for so many areas of life.

I currently use sonnet 3.7 for coding, 4o for general purpose questions, o3 for deep research / analysis.

1/ 99% of life is showing up. Not just your presence, but your attention and proactiveness.

Notice who shows up.
Notice who lingers.
Notice who helps without being asked.
These are the people saying “I’m looking for this too".
