RIP Jane Goodall, by all accounts a wonderful woman who loved this Far Side cartoon

To clarify, these soybeans are still a few weeks from being ready for harvest, so they're not "unharvested" yet. There were other massive fields, however, with the plants fully dried out that got my attention. Corn too –– quite unusual to see so much corn left in the fields.

Had an event in southeastern #Kansas this weekend. It was a great time with both established and budding #ornithologists.

Driving the backroads on the way home though, I noticed something sobering: massive fields of #corn #maize and #soybean going unharvested, presumably 'cause no markets.

Lovely song featuring Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker & Rick Grech. Shame they didn’t do another album, there's a lot of talent there!

Asked the #ornithology students to name their favorite #dinosaur today. Observations:

1) This made them happy.

2) They all named extinct, non-avian dinosaurs. Next week I'll ask for their favorite #extant dinosaurs.

So, exactly what we warned people about a year ago, then?

This is why you don't elect "businessmen" to public office who refuse to operate that office from a position of civil service.

Trump thinks he's CEO of a 340-million person company. He's not.

HE works for **US**.

If he's not performing to standard, then WE need to FIRE HIM.

Today, it’s a lit course that mentions gender. Tomorrow, it’ll be a history course that brings up civil rights. Next, a science class that mentions climate change. And in each case, a video from some incurious dipshit of a student filming it, boasting that they’ve reported the professor.

And, with a few notable exceptions, you could pretty much insert any "she" into the tweet.

Sarah's out here doing the Lord's work by posting links to new and interesting publications. This is a huge part of what made OG #ScienceTwitter a thing.

Knowing this basic demographic information is really important for understanding population trend data. And only possible by long-term studies, which underlines the importance of sustainable funding.

This is a brick upon which something bigger is being built... stay tuned!

I brought this up to an absolute A-team of EJ scholars and we wrote an essay about it, which was just published in Biological Conservation. (2/3)

'Twas Audubon so might be fanciful... but he claimed to have shot Passenger Pigeons on Long Island coming up from points south with their crops full of rice. Assuming rice was in the fields when gathered, this would mean nonstop flights from Carolinas in a few hours' time.

The last passenger pigeon died 111 years ago today and not a day goes by that I don't think about how their flocks numbered in the *billions*, that their roosts covered 100+ square miles, that they collapsed trees with their nests. America is incomplete without them

Here's the even more interesting part: the absolute values.

Twitter used to be the clear winner for me, but Bluesky is rapidly catching up. Even though I have 3x more followers on X than Bluesky, the actual numbers on positive or neutral engagement here is nearly as high. That's amazing!
