YES! I love this! I ask the same questions about images in colleagues' papers, grant applications... and invariably the answer is "well I needed an image here" or "I had to break up the text". Sigh.

This one hit hard 😭

Simultaneously a crushing but uplifting read, especially for those of us battling daily. Not sure there's a more insidious disorder than one that fundamentally changes how we think and perceive. Many many thanks for putting yourself out there and for shining a light on this experience.

Truly the Gary Gulman of the MMA community. That was a phenomenal read - many thanks for sharing.

I am in absolute shock, as this basically never happens for Texas mbb against quality opponents. It's almost always the opposite - building a 20pt lead then letting it evaporate by going away from all the things that were working. Unreal 🎉😭

It occurred to me that you may (also) be addressing the fruitless practice of interpreting individual covariates for prediction within the context of a multivariable model, which if so... agreed. Evaluate overall model performance via internal/external validation and leave it at that.
January 21, 2025 at 11:06 PM
Sigh. This is rampant in the veterinary literature. One day I will convince colleagues that fitting a model is not prediction. Or not... *sob*
January 21, 2025 at 10:06 PM
I still use the actual terms with veterinary clients - if something is predictive of disease, I just say that. If something merely has a statistical association with an outcome but has not been evaluated as a predictor (via internal or external validation), I say nothing, because those tell me zilch
January 21, 2025 at 9:58 PM
One hundred percent this. There is nothing inherently predictive about a model, it has to be *evaluated* that way. There must be some attempt to measure internal (and in a pipe-dream, external) validity. Fitting a model is *not* prediction.

…aaaand now they’re within 10. This is a classic Texas mbb collapse in the making.

Ok, I need the Sickos explanation for what “BallerTV” is…

Just go on Ebay and search for "ford key fob shell" and add your make/model. I've had to replace my Honda's several times. You just swap over the key and the electronics to the new shell. This might be a fit depending on what the other side of your keyfob looks like

Weird and wonderful fact in veterinary medicine I always love sharing: RBC membranes of adult dogs & cats don't contain Na-K-ATPases, so their RBCs don't have high intracellular K and won't result in false hyperkalemia with hemolysis. Exceptions are the Japanese dog breeds (e.g. Shiba Inu & Akita)

It sure seems like it’s (far past) time to apply the same logic to Tw*tter - I have no desire to contribute to his traffic numbers and ad revenue. I wish more of the accounts I follow would make the switch.

This is still my favorite DAG meme of all time (and one of my fav #stats memes overall). Did a spit-take the first time I read it...

Lump veterinary ER in there too - some of the worst injuries I’ve seen have come from panicked dogs jumping through windows and sliding glass doors. Very thankful to be off this evening.
