Aspiring fiction writer, former professional philosopher, current life wanderer.
I just started working as a bookseller in an indie store about three months ago, but from what I'm learning this is true!

We don't buy huge back stock (unless it's like Sarah J. Maas popular). But, we definitely notice when the stock we do buy leaves the shelf and we always fill it back in.
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

What's everyone excited to read in December?

I'm excited for

"We Will Rise Again" Older, Newitz, Lord.

"House of Day, House of Night," Tokarczuk.

"The Sea Captain's Wife," Mazzeo.

Well, in an absolutely horrifying turn of events: It's almost December!

How did everyone's projects turn out for the year? Do you have anything exciting going into next year?

Share your accomplishments and goals!

Alright. Life threw a few curve balls, but I'm back.

Let's finish writing this thing.

45k/100k words.

1.5/3 parts.

This book will get finished.

How can anyone write anything right now when the most absurd story is happening in real life. A villain I would be laughed at for creating because of how unbelievable he islive tweeting the kick off to WW3 while misspelling his own name is just... Where do you go from there?

Netflix is trying to get the live action rights to Baldur's Gate 3. But, we should learn from The Last of Us season 2 that video games can just tell a better story, because of the use of player agency, than movies or shows. And that's good! Let them stand on their own.

The more Craig Mazin talks about his choices and interpretations of the characters, the more I'm convinced he just fundamentally misunderstood The Last of Us Part 2.

Seems like now's a good time to repost this and remind everyone I was a philosopher before I was an aspiring writer. And that people don't get passes just because you like them. 🤭

Really gonna need my subconscious to stop feeding me the dream where it's the last week of the semester and I realize I haven't done any work or been to any classes.

I graduated 11 years ago. Please.

Aspiring authors: I cannot recommend joining a writing group enough. I have gotten to read so many styles and genre I wouldn't normally, and I have gotten incredible feedback that has absolutely made me a better storyteller.

Plus, it keeps me accountable to putting words on the page.

I was suddenly reminded about the absolute worst class I ever had to take in my 14 years of philosophy training.

That single class almost convinced me to drop out of grad school all together in just my first year.

Whoof. The realization that your first draft really is a ROUGH draft is... Well, rough.

Submitted a short story to a journal. Time to be anxious until I finally get the rejection.

How do you build up excitement for a novel that's still a work in progress? If at all?

January's reads.

February is short, so I don't know if I can tackle six books again.

But, I'm definitely happy with the pace to start the year.

Joined a writing group.

Uploaded my first bit for feedback.

Sweating nervously because obviously everyone will hate it and me by extension.

Have a meeting to maybe join a writing group tomorrow so I can keep myself accountable. And also to read other people's amazing work and see their progress.

Pretty excited.

Caught between an invading army threatening to destroy everything you love and an oppressive ruling class, do you defend your home or risk an opportunity to restructure society?

Twin Tales is a character driven story about how values are challenged in the face of dire events.

Ran into an interesting question about whether the "Brand" of MLK has been tainted by the right enough that it stifles the fight for racial equality/ if it's time to let it go.

Absolutely not. MLK was radical. It's time that we start highlighting that.

There is no sterilized fight against racism.

I am... Disconcerted by the amount of AI art I'm seeing people use to promote their books on #booksky.

Support your fellow artists in their different medium, and don't use the systems that are actively stealing their work.
