Newberry County (South Carolina) Sheriff explains why he sounded the tornado sirens for a severe thunderstorm warning on Saturday.

Questioning every NWS decision because Helene went worse than you expected isn't a good way to operate, Lee.

As things stand tonight, I think the coast and the Pee Dee region have the highest chance of experiencing tropical impacts (wind, rain, tornadoes) from future Imelda. Timing looks to be Monday-Tuesday next week.

Pretty serious situation developing in Upstate South Carolina this evening. Residents along nearly 100 roads in Greenville and Pickens Counties are under mandatory evacuations due to the ongoing Table Rock Fire Complex. It's 0% contained, and more elevated fire danger is expected tomorrow.

A multi-day severe weather outbreak is likely for late this week from the Mississippi River Valley to the east coast.

Here's what I'm fairly comfortable saying at this point:
🔵Potential snow or wintry mix would move through Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night
🔵 Snow is the most likely precipitation type for the Midlands
🔵 Wintry precipitation will be most likely south of I-20

This is the general idea of what we are expecting late this week. A Gulf low moves toward South Carolina and brings a lot of moisture with it. I think temperatures aloft will be above freezing in the Midlands, so snow is unlikely locally. I'm not ruling out ice though.

What I don't know:
-Whether or not it's going to snow next week. Long range models hint at the possibility around Jan. 10-12, but it's too early to know for sure. We usually need a strong low to track along the coast to get snow here. That's possible, but far from a guarantee

What I know:
- Friday and Monday are going to be windy
- Sunday night and Monday morning will likely be rainy
- Most of next week is going to be about as cold as it gets around here

Sunday is a Weather Warn Day for the threat of severe thunderstorms from the late morning through the afternoon. There's some uncertainty if all the severe ingredients will come together at the same time. If they line up, damaging wind gusts and a tornado or two will be possible.

Fun, insane plot. Patrick Swayze was great. Hot take! - Keanu's acting kind of sucked.

We have a shot at a dusting of snow along the SC-NC border tonight. Perhaps a few flurries around Columbia, but nothing that will cause any trouble.

I - and pretty much everyone else - refers to central South Carolina as the Midlands. Karen doesn't like it. So I'm going to keep doing it.
