Newberry County (South Carolina) Sheriff explains why he sounded the tornado sirens for a severe thunderstorm warning on Saturday.

Questioning every NWS decision because Helene went worse than you expected isn't a good way to operate, Lee.

As things stand tonight, I think the coast and the Pee Dee region have the highest chance of experiencing tropical impacts (wind, rain, tornadoes) from future Imelda. Timing looks to be Monday-Tuesday next week.

My alma mater, the University of Nebraska, has proposed eliminating the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. This department provides the only undergraduate meteorology degree program in all of Nebraska.

SPC’s severe weather database is now QC’ed and updated for all of 2024. It was quite the year, coming in 2nd place for number of confirmed tornadoes since 1950, trailing the prolific 2004 season and overtaking the historic 2011 season. 2024 did see the most Sig Wind (65+ kt) reports since 1955.

National Weather Service employees were encouraged to take early retirements at an all-hands meeting Thursday. The union believes as many as 1,000 could leave in the coming months - out of a workforce of just over 4,000.

Pretty serious situation developing in Upstate South Carolina this evening. Residents along nearly 100 roads in Greenville and Pickens Counties are under mandatory evacuations due to the ongoing Table Rock Fire Complex. It's 0% contained, and more elevated fire danger is expected tomorrow.

Of note for South Carolina: "An EF-1 tornado in Cordova, South Carolina is now the widest documented tornado (1,100 yards) in the entire U.S. tropical cyclone tornado database, which goes back to 1995."
For those interested the @NOAA National Hurricane Center has released their #Helene Tropical Cyclone Report.

Got word from a broadcast meteorologist buddy in Oregon that management is forcing them to show a 14 day forecast because a consultant thinks it's a good idea. TV consultants have a lot of big ideas - because they wouldn't have a job if they didn't - and they're mostly bad.

Of all the things that are pissing me off today, this is the part that's pissing me off the most.
I wasn't going to look, because everyone else was clearly handling the replies for me, but... what part of "private services use NOAA/NWS data for everything" excludes TWC from also using the data as a private service 🤦🏼‍♀️

The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within #NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (#NWS), is profoundly alarming.

Bad, bad timing and bad, bad look from Accu on this. The old rules no longer apply. We're either in this together to fight on behalf of NOAA or we're intentionally putting our own self-interest first, consequences be damned. Sorry, but I'm not sorry.
This is…not helpful. And likely aimed at an audience of one that rhymes with MAUDGE.

Here's what I'm fairly comfortable saying at this point:
🔵Potential snow or wintry mix would move through Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night
🔵 Snow is the most likely precipitation type for the Midlands
🔵 Wintry precipitation will be most likely south of I-20
