Please pardon my followers-to-following ratio. I had to give up my old account (due to harassment) in March and have been rebuilding over the past 3-4 days among historians, history educators and teachers, philosophers, and thinkers.

Cubs-Brewers Over-reaction: Counsell has already lost the game for the Cubs, in the first, by leaving in Boyd too long. Jeez. You can't be too loyal in the playoffs---especially to a pitcher.

Monitoring the Cubs-Brewers game while grading. Before I could get settled Michael Busch had already hit a first-inning, lead-off homerun for the Cubbies. I like how things are going so far. :)

I want to be clear: there is no need for military troops on the ground in the State of Illinois.

In Illinois, we will do everything within our power to look out for our neighbors, uphold the Constitution, and defend the rule of law.

I will not call up our National Guard to further Trump’s acts of aggression against our people.

This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will. It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.

And another great one from MLB.com's Sarah Langs:

Michael Busch is the 7th player in at least the last 125 seasons with two games with 13+ total bases in a season, joining:

2024 Kyle Schwarber
2005 Alex Rodriguez
1996 Geronimo Berroa
1986 Joe Carter
1961 Willie Mays
1948 Joe DiMaggio

There is no world in which it is normal for the president to publicly call upon his attorney general to hurry up and prosecute his political foes. It’s like the Watergate tapes but posted on social media. Let’s get a grip on what’s happening here.

Got sucked into the side of TikTok commenting on the trend in American evangelicalism right now—where there’s a growing belief that that the rapture will happen this Tuesday—September 23rd

This is due to a of set of things happening in Israel interpreted through a tangled "Left Behind" theology+

One of these presidents is definitely not a good person.
The 45/47 president is talking about the 46th.

Wow. History made.

Clipse just became the first hip-hop act ever to perform at the Vatican, backed by John Legend and the Voices of Free orchestra.

They performed “The Birds Don’t Sing.”

Big accomplishments in today's class, which was orienting students to the library, our catalog, and a couple of databases:

1. Witnessed a senior check a book out for the first time

2. A student whose mom is an author located her mom's books in the stacks and sent her a picture

I would love to see Hoerner meet that old school bar of excellence. It's easy to root for a guy who does so many things well (baserunning, OBP, defense, contact, good with runners in scoring position, etc.)
bastianmlb.bsky.social
Nico Hoerner is 3-for-3 so far tonight and his season average is up to .295. The Cubs have only had four qualified hitters hit .300+ dating back to 2011: Cody Bellinger (.307 in '23), Ben Zobrist (.305 in '18), Starlin Castro (.307 in '11) and Aramis Ramirez (.306 in '11).

Nice W! And the Cubs needed that series win.

Really love that when I open any page on my course Canvas sites, Google Lens offers to take over and complete the homework with AI. I'm sure none of my students will be tempted.

Teaching in 2025 is a sisyphean endeavor. Sigh.

Peer reviewers are exhausted. It's common to spend *months* inviting reviewers, getting refusals, inviting more, maybe 12 or more, then 2 agree but 1 doesn't complete, so you go again. That's why your paper is in limbo. I'm very sorry, it's awful, but it's also an untenable academic labour issue.
