This is the deepest journalism I’ve seen yet on AI’s impact on the US power sector. I’m honored to be included w/ David Victor, Ari Peskoe, Costa Samaras, EPRI, and others. 🔌💡 www.technologyreview.com/2025/05/20/1...

NextEra SVP Petter Skantze says battery storage is now “the cheapest form of new capacity” in the US w/ “order of magnitude” faster deployment than gas w/ more modularity & flexible siting to enable higher system utilization & large load integration — #GridFWD in Monterey, CA 🔌💡

Looking forward to delivering this talk to my provincial utility commission this week on flexible electricity demand!

Lots of @tnorris.bsky.social @severinborenstein.bsky.social @jigarshahdc.bsky.social inspiration and references throughout!

New from @severinborenstein.bsky.social: "The key to making new data center demand a benefit to other customers is to create incentives for these new loads to restrain their peak demand and to avoid discount pricing so the new loads significantly contribute to covering system fixed costs." 🔌💡

Really excellent piece on data center load growth, the obligation to serve, and ideas about where we go from here.

Only in @heatmap.news can you get @zeitlin.bsky.social explaining why electricity markets as they exist may no longer be fit for purpose, and how we can look to industries that regulate scarce resources, like water, for reforms. heatmap.news/energy/elect...
Electricity Markets Aren’t Working Anymore
Why regional transmission organizations as we know them might not survive the data center boom.

Today our transmission grid capacity is only used about 55% of the time. Our distribution grid, less than 30% of the time. But for 50-100 hours a year everything could be used close to 100% of their capacity — so we overinvest in those hours.

Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence.

Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets.

Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe.

It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

Governors of PA, NJ, MD, and IL call on PJM to streamline energy resource interconnection service (ERIS) and connect-and-manage options to accelerate generator interconnection (source: comments on PJM CFIP large loads proposal, pg 37 www.pjm.com/-/media/DotC... )
tnorris.bsky.social
Coverage of PJM’s non-firm service proposal for large loads has missed the mark, casting stakeholder pushback as “opposition” to demand response, when the primary objections are to PJM’s mandatory approach. I count at least 17 stakeholders expressing interest in modernized demand response.

It's been 7 months since @tnorris.bsky.social's report on flexible data centers dropped, making a major splash in the energy and AI worlds. But how far have we really come on flexibility? On Friday I'm sitting down for a live interview with Tyler to take stock: www.latitudemedia.com/events/the-r...

@tnorris.bsky.social on why narratives about data center power demand are making it appear more constant & closer to full capacity than it actually is. Getting this right is key to heading off overbuild of generation and grid infrastructure. Big implications for climate, electricity rates and more.
The Puzzle of Low Data Center Utilization Rates
Contrary to popular belief, data centers aren't maxed out around the clock - and this has real consequences for power system planning
