Hard to find a more knowledgable team to understand cell biology in an evolutionary context!

LMB PhD studentship available in the Baum lab to use informatics to infer cell structure from genomic data in collaboration with the brilliant Tom Williams. If you write to me and I don’t reply - try again - the spam filter is hungry…

Ok, so the ancient Greeks massively misled me about the number of body fluids... bad sense of humor.

I still very much rely on RSS feeds to consume journal TOCs in an easily accessible manner. I don't know how else I would find things that are interesting but not immediately relevant to what we work on. I can't automate looking for unknown unknowns.

You would have enjoyed my latest trip to Hamburg where the driver stopped the bus when somebody watched something without their headphones in and gave a 30sec speech about civic responsibility and the demise of civilisation. Phone was silent thereafter.

Please re-post: If you know (or are!) somebody who might fancy doing a PhD (Oct 2026 start) in my group @oxfordbiochemistry.bsky.social, working on chromatin evolution in prokaryotes (or other things we're interested in), please have a look at www.bioch.ox.ac.uk/supervisors-...

🚨 Imagine a bacterium that refuses to follow the textbook:
It grows as tangled filaments, divides unevenly, reshapes its own membranes… and even builds grappling hooks.
Meet Litorilinea aerophila — and here’s why it blew our minds.
