Meanwhile people are out here writing books in stolen moments, between meetings about steering and assessment, 200 words at a time

Terminal manager-brain, I'm afraid. What's seen as important is not research but the apparatus around research. Partnerships! Capacity-building for these partnerships that you just forced these institutions to form! Assessing and steering!

Low speeds save lives; asking for higher speeds is a pro-death position, especially for your children and elderly family.
johnmunro.bsky.social
In light of the clear evidence that introducing reasonable speed limits means less people killed and seriously injured, politicians threatening to reverse these improvements should be worried about getting sued for knowingly putting people in harm's way.
Graph indicating an immediate drop in road casualties in Wales after speed limits were lowered.

Also, enjoying the rather eighteenth century capitalisation going on here. I did not write that copy!

Every time I open an ebook via the university library I (and therefore presumably my students) get a handy "would you like an AI summary of this chapter?" popup.
tattersdill.bsky.social
When I open a PDF with Adobe Reader, there are THREE separate injunctions to use "AI" on different parts of the screen. A core feature (eg. 'Save as...') has one place where we learn to go as a necessary part of the software. "AI" is not a core feature; it is something else

I'm proud to be from a country where students go to university to explore research and knowledge, and I actually think society needs *fewer* crypto-hustling drop-shippers who aspire to live in Dubai

Just smashing the reset button again and again and again as smoke pours out of my computer and flames begin to lick the edge of the screen. One more reset might just do the trick, I think, as the acrid smell of disintegrating hardware fills the room...

Reminder that Birmingham, second biggest city in the UK, whose city council is led by this man, hasn't had domestic recycling services for 8 months due to a pay dispute. The only way to get to recycling centres is with a private vehicle. #CarBrain

Still can’t believe cutting skilled and experienced frontline admin, hiring a billion Dean level overseers, and passing tasks down to academics who will either do them grumpily or not at all isn’t working? Maybe rolling out a new IT project can smooth this one over

At what point does "they must be pre-emptively capitulating to what they assume to be someone else's ideas" become "maybe this is what they actually want"?
