Music, comics, assorted grousing, he/him. CURRENT THINGS are Discourse 2000, a 2000AD blog and Popular, about the UK’s No 1 hits. I also waste my time (and maybe yours!) with @peoples-pop-polls.bsky.com

Jan 27: SIMONA - Astuta (2025)

Spanish dance-pop, very up to the minute and globally minded, I’ll be honest though I had it on while I worked and can’t remember much beyond “yeah! that was good!”

Lots of interesting stuff in this analysis but I especially liked this part on the appeal of AI to the boss class, which goes beyond the (also true) “it allows them to fire more people” bit

Jan 26: GIRLFRIEND - Honey Water (2026)

Short and smoochy R&B album - pleasant enough but none of the songs stuck with me even when they were playing

The only one of his I remember thinking was exciting (NB I did not read the ones about communists) was We Didn't Mean To Go To Sea though to me it fell short of this (more realistic as you can see)

Jan 25: MCKINLEY DIXON - Magic, Alive! (2025)

Oh yeah this is the good stuff! The most successful jazz-rap fusion I’ve heard in ages, Dixon’s nasal flow sometimes weaving around the music, sometimes dipping out of its way

Jan 24: XG - The Core (2026)

Japanese pop-rap girl group, more anglophone than most, a fun way to pass half an hour but as others have mentioned it suddenly comes to life during a one-song lurch into pop-punk

11. X-MANHUNT by Various

I’ve been enjoying the main two X-Men comics but this linewide crossover is a complete mess - Professor X gets out of jail; he has a mutant brain tumor (barely mentioned again); X-Book pass the parcel ensues until he goes into space instead of jail again

At last we have created the cute racist goth girl from the classic story Don't Create The Cute Racist Goth Girl

Jan 23: POPPY - Empty Hands (2026)

The first track on this is the best and hints at a mall emo direction which might be more productive when the epic goth metal one runs its course - but perhaps it will never run its course!

Reminding myself that the media can in fact go “this person is a regime mouthpiece who lies constantly” when it suits them

Jan 22: DJ HARAM - Beside Myself (2025)

Moody, bassy, electronic collage which I (predictably) liked best when it pulled itself together into something you could imagine dancing to

#ProjectBossBaby has a mountain to climb in FITZCARRALDO (1982) in which a maniac attempting the impossible is filmed by a maniac attempting the impossible. My thoughts -

The deep lore of PR lives on!

Jan 21: BRUNA BLACK - Fulorà (2025)

New to me singer from Sao Paolo doing soulful Brazilian pop - nothing startling in songwriting or arrangement but a lovely, relaxing late night listen

10. MERRY WITCHES LIFE Vol 1 by Menota

Three widows decide to learn magic to resurrect their husbands - so far at least this is a delightful light comedy about processing grief not the Monkey’s Paw style horror the premise might suggest

Jan 20: STURDYYOUNGIN - Rookie Of The Year (2025)

Let the record show I had my first abandoned album (Jorjiana) before this bouncy and warm-hearted rap debut though there’s nothing else as grabby as the delightful “TRIPPIN”

Jan 19: XIANGYU - Enryu no Katamari (2025)

I loved this one - a short, skittery, idea packed pop album which sounds like it could only have been made right now. Apparently it’s all about food and the title means the last piece left on a shared plate, so now you know!
