oh yeah i forgor to update on this because I've been so busy. looks and sounds fantastic! I'm using a røde smartlav+ with it here. just need to make a TRRS to TRS adapter (the mic is designed for use with smartphones) for it and I can sell this thing on for a nice profit

December 31, 2025 at 12:05 PM
check it out I bought this canon eos 700 and a 35-80mm f/4-5.6 lens for 10€

idk anything about film photography but the shutter timing and light seals seem to be okay? idk, I'll get a roll of film and take it for a test drive

would've preferred a fully manual camera but it'll do for now

A blizzard has come down upon you. You seek shelter. You find industrial looking doors.

You knock on the doors. There is no response.

I've never understood why drill manufacturers use those dinky little LEDs that light up when you half press the trigger. ah yes, let's illuminate everything EXCEPT the thing we want 😭😭😭
December 25, 2025 at 11:00 AM
even though I've fixed it for now, I can't actually use the lens because first I'll need to get 3mm tap to make new threads for it. after getting both the spring and new holes, it should be completely operational
December 24, 2025 at 4:37 PM
there is something I can do to help the spring though. there's this pin at the back of the lens which probably interfaces with something in a native m42 mount camera. when the pin is pressed down it closes down the aperture. I can just put tape on it and it'll push on the aperture rod
December 24, 2025 at 4:30 PM
I shortened the spring by taking it and wrapping the un-wound section around the silver pole a couple of times. the aperture still feels a bit sluggish at times but it feels usable at least
December 24, 2025 at 4:24 PM
the black piece is connected to the aperture ring with a metal bracket. thus when you set the aperture ring to f/22, the spring pulls the silver piece back and the black piece doesn't impede its movement. when you set the ring to, for example, f/4, the black piece moves the silver piece back
December 24, 2025 at 3:27 PM
"so what's the black piece doing?" you may ask. well that actually opens the aperture. it kind of acts like a brake - if it's all the way down, the aperture is *allowed* to go down to f/22, and if the spring is put to the other side to constantly pull the aperture closed, it works as intended
December 24, 2025 at 3:18 PM
the beast has been conquered. their pillar drill had some damage so we couldn't use a 1-2mm bit on it because they were too small so we ended up just doing it with a hand drill. this metal stick with the spring controls the aperture, and if I move it by hand, it actually works fine!
