Health alert issued and warning of rise in deaths because temperature to fall to minus one tonight.
Minus one! A December heatwave for previous generations.

Christmas was going so well until I woke up this morning to the Test score.
Need Bradford City to restore my faith in Santa Claus this afternoon.

For many years I'd never heard of "pigs in blankets". Now it seems they're the be-all and end-all of Christmas. I call bacon and sausages on Christmas Day something else: breakfast

When the bid to take the World Cup to North America was lodged it stated that the cheapest seats would be 21 dollars. That's become 220 dollars. Blimey, either inflation is horrendous in the USA or it's further proof that FIFA is hopelessly corrupt. Shall I boycott it? Probably not.

I just found this badge. THE MAN FROM UNCLE tv show was almost as big as Beatlemania back in the sixties.

Strange yellow object in the sky today. Extensive research suggests it is something called "the sun"

My home town (Skipton) is "officially" the happiest place in the UK. They obviously didn't survey the blokes in my local pub. I'm heading there this afternoon for my regular dollop of cynicism, gloom and moaning - usually about the tourists.

Fine writing about the Ashes by Jarrod Kimber. This stands out about an England batter's display (can't remember which but it could be any except Root).
"His innings was a tweet but England needed an article".
If Bradford City don't win at Plymouth this lunchtime then my weekend is totally blootered

@oispooky.bsky.social At the risk of deluging you with too much info, heres a couple of cuttings from my research from the local paper. Second one has interesting info on how much Jem Mace was paid in 1884. If you want exact references let me know

My daughter, who teaches politics at A level has been told she can't invite her MP to talk to them about politics because it would be "too political"

I'm just getting over the shock of that England performance on the Ashes. Maybe tomorrow I'll feel like facing the world again and leaving the house.

Saw Google boss Sundhar Pichai on TV news. My verdict?
What a scruffy bastard. Someone buy him a pair of shoes.

Started adjusting body clock to get in tune with Ashes cricket coverage.
Staying up till 3am tonight. If England are 60 for 4 on day one I shall be extremely annoyed.

Lunch in Usk(Monmouthshire) where menu included rabbit pie, pheasant and partridge. Beat that Wetherspoons! Can't remember last time I had rabbit pie so that was my choice.

My wise men in the pub reckon that in 20 years there'll be no such thing as Bonfire Night. It's all about Halloween. When I was a lad I'd never heard of Halloween. Grandkids interested in witches and ghouls. Not bothered about a freedom fighter 400 years ago.

Just had my post on BBC website about the rugby union match removed for breaking their rules. It said "Rugby union is getting too technical. it's about fat blokes taking five minutes over a scrum". This it seems is either racist, misogynist or likely to cause offence. I could appeal but hey-ho.

England v Australia in second rugby league test today. Not a mention in the Times but two pages on Ireland v New Zealand, not part of UK last time I looked, and one page on two American footballers from Alabama. Fuck off Times, last time I buy it. I'll put up with the boring Guardian from now on.

I'm astonished that the victims in the Grooming Gangs inquiry want Jess Phillips to quit. If I was in a corner and wanted someone on my side it would be her. Still, I'm way off the loop on this. Just can't see her as an establishment stooge.

I would love to see more rich and famous people funding literary culture (they could still do something big with their names on it!) rather than pretending that they can write fiction.
