In Dali's portrait of his father (1925) the figure, in its bulk and its weight, embodies the idea of authority. It is not easily budged. It was a difficult relationship and later in his career, Dali's images of the father figure would be transformed into monsters.

'Sleeping Girl.' (1927) Just like Laura Knight, Dod Procter became well known in Britain in the mid-1920s after painting a series of portraits of young women using the fall of light across the figures to give a sense of volume; a style which shows her admiration for Giotto.

This work by Pieter Buegel is probably the very first painting of a White Christmas. The pregnant, blue-cloaked Mary rides a donkey led by Joseph, but they are inconspicuous as part of the throng (The Census at Bethlehem, 1566) www.artinsociety.com/bruegelrsquo...

'A Christmas Present.' (1963) It is as an exquisite painter of objects, usually of everyday items that Eliot Hodgkin is best known - the 'placement,' of the object, as much as the way the surface texture is described in paint, makes these still-lifes fascinating and memorable.

I love the work of Stanhope Forbes. This piece, especially, very poignant tonight. The way he captures the light, the weariness of the adults, and the wonder on the faces of the children. I think it is rather beautiful. 🖼️
