So even when a company has no intention of doing monstrous things with your content, you tend to get licenses that let them do so if they want - not out of malice, but out of CYA and resource-management.

PS: The amount of text space available in the ALT text window is several times longer than what's available in the standard text field, so even long text passages can be pasted there. If you run out of space, break up the screenshot; it's probably too long at that point for just one post anyway.

I often get asked if revision of GL is necessary given the increasing frequency of such comparisons. My response has been that if you're falling into a black hole, the last thing you need to spend your limited time on is revising the law of gravity.

Seeing a lot of news articles explaining that most Americans don’t want the jobs Trump wants to reshore. That doesn’t apply to everyone obviously. There’s lots of demand for high value add manufacturing jobs. But a lot of the push for “manly” jobs is a push for jobs for *other* people to do.

Also on Reddit today, someone thinking that I am apologetic for being a white dude. Nah, friends. I think we all know that being a white dude in the US is pretty great. My sin, if you will, is thinking everyone else should have the same latitude in life that I get just by being a white dude.

Lee Atwater had a pungent and famous quote about how once conservatives could no longer use the n-word they used things like “states’ rights” to invoke the same spirit.

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration any more — if it ever was — to say they use DEI as the n-word.
i think it is important to say that the open and explicit racism of the president and the vice president isn’t just uncouth or “controversial” but a direct attack on tens of millions of americans and a dereliction of their duty to represent the entire country

That's what you can expect from now on. Trump will blame every disaster, every dip in the stock market, every fire, every earthquake, every hurricane, every exploding rocket and jackknifed semi, and every failure of his administration on anyone who is not a straight, white Christian male.

Here’s a problem with saying the connection between vaccines and autism has been “debunked.” If by “debunked” you mean there’s scientific consensus it’s not real, and only freaks and cranks believe it, if your population is indifferent to science and friendly to freaks and cranks, it’s not debunked.

This seems to be a point that could use additional clarification. So here's another example:

There is a general rule that you can destroy your own property at any time for any reason. But that doesn't help you if you destroy records you own in an effort to derail an investigation.
But there are - *and always have been* - exceptions to that general rule. One exception has always been if the open source maintainer enters into a contract that commits them to continued maintenance. And there are others.

I have an enduring image in my head of the German people (those who were left) standing in the rubble of their country, invaded, occupied, divided, and looking at each other- "hey fritz, you voted for this guy back in the day- how'd that "make Germany great again" work out for us?"

Yeeeeeaaah, the doomerism thing is real bullshit. As a nation we were collectively stupid enough to let him get back into a seat of power, but it's now our responsibility to collectively put as many goddamn tacks onto that seat as we possibly can. Make Power Fucking Painful is the mantra for 2025.
a lot of you seem to basically believe that politics is over, history has ended and the absence of legal or electoral consequences for trump means that he is the only person with agency. you all are recapitulating the basic conceit of trump’s alleged invincibility, but from the center left

The one thing Threads has that I wish we had here is the "restrict" function, in which people can still read what you post, but all their comments are in a silo where no one else sees them. It's brilliant for the "you aren't evil but you sure are exhausting" category of person who exists online.
I wish there was a soft block. It doesn't seem to be.

Holy crap this is an astounding piece of historical research

One of the cheap and easy things DOGE will do is pick entries in the federal budget, strip them of all context, and memeify and ridicule them.

Surely there are things in the budget are ludicrous. But do you trust any of these people to represent them honestly?

I mean (gestures at the world) it's not just social media where one finds out about weird shit. Fiction at least has to make narrative sense; the real world is under no such obligation.

Also, you know. My next book is about the moon turning into cheese. I don't worry much about implausibility.
Do you ever write something (fiction) and worry "I don't know if readers will buy this idea" then read something on social media and stop worrying?
