Saddened to learn about the death of @lfpress.com.web.brid.gy photographer Derek Ruttan. I only met him once, when he took this shot of our backyard maple operation back in 2021. It struck me then that he understood the human side of #cdnmedia well. May he rest in peace. lfpress.com/news/local-n...

Earlier this year, my Dad gave me a bunch of family records. I haven’t had time to go through the whole box, but over the week I dug out a few things of my great grandmother’s. She grew up in Sandstone, #Minnesota. I am glad to have some roots there, even if distant. #GoodPeople live in #Minnesota.

I’ve had a great start to my day & I hope you do too!

Welcoming the first #sunrise of #2026 with a ski in my “backyard.” One of the wonderful things about the #ForestCity is the ability to x-country ski from my front steps. #HappyNewYear from #ldnont!

There was no more powerful testament to the Acadian Deportation than this Oak Tree, which is now long gone. As it died and stood at Horton Landing, it told the story of the #GrandDerangement better than any history book or plaque. Alex Colville captured this so well in 1956.

A great way to start the morning, crossing the Wolastoq River!

I spent today at the Woodland Cultural Centre as they reopened the #MohawkInstitute building to the public & we launched Behind the Bricks. It was so powerful seeing so many people at a place that was closed off from public eyes for over a century. Here are some pics.

Back from representing Huron’s faculty association on the @opseusefpo.bsky.social picket lines at Fanshawe College. If you work in #cdnpse in #ldnont, please consider joining the picket lines. Colleges & universities are critical parts of a democratic society; support staff lie at their foundation.

One of #ldnont’s worst traffic intersections is not getting a real solution. There is an easy fix: @westernu.ca, which now owns Brescia College, could extend a road to make their gigantic west parking lot accessible from Sarnia Road. Maybe this is part of the current construction.

#EmancipationDay parade at Fanshawe Pioneer Village. If you are in #ldnont, the museum is open all day with a ton of great things to do!

So glad that @westernu.ca is hosting the International #Trombone festival this week! Universities are not really about the economy as much as they are about building healthy societies that support communities in living a #GoodLife.

Fun #cdnhist fact about my past 7 days: Last week at this time I was taking in the Loire from #Nantes, one of France’s principal ports. This evening I am at the mouth of the #Saguenay at #Tadoussac, a place frequented by many Nantais fishers & fur traders in the seventeenth century.

A beautiful ending to an enjoyable Sunday spent visiting some of North America’s greatest museums.

This guy on Sunset St in #ldnont cost me just over $400 in car repair (wrecked my tire). There are some bad, and growing, potholes out there! Watch out & drive carefully.

It’s not everyday you get to skate to work! Thrilled to have some time to talk about #TheSlowRushOfColonization today @carletonu.bsky.social.

We got a lot of snow yesterday in #ldnont. One of the most frustrating things about this is that several of my neighbours clear their driveways but not the sidewalk. I see this behaviour as a sign of the times: why care or consider your neighbours as long as your comfort is adequately addressed.

Great overnight holiday trip to #Detroit, #BelleIsle, & the #HenryFord! That lighthouse has to be the nicest on the #GreatLakes!

One of the best parts of Christmas morning (or any special breakfast in our house) are my wife’s waffles… which are beginning the fermentation process… Merry Christmas everyone.

Violence against women remains all too common & lately it has come to feel like many of us have little interest in ending it. On the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, let’s recommit to ending the structures & tools that make our communities unsafe for women & girls.
