I think it's because Drs are taught that 1)hyperparathyroidism is rare (it's not), and 2) that high normal or slightly above normal blood calcium levels in adults can be ignored (it shouldn't be).
When my PTH test came back higher than normal, my PCP was still in disbelief that I had PHPT.
