I lived in fear of this day, and it’s here. I finally got called out by The Onion

This is what we hope to do in El Cerrito - build a new library at Plaza BART, along with 743 homes.

This is our best opportunity for a new library, as there’s not space to rebuild on current site and the lease for the BART site will be $1.

A citizens measure is circulating now to fund the library.

Cities are developing a new approach to developing housing: Integrating it into mixed-use library projects. These investments improve neighborhood vitality, add housing & improve services.

In new research @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, I create a database of such projects & point to success stories ⏬
Aging Libraries Could Offer Cities a Unique Opportunity to Build New Housing While Improving Public Services
Since 2000, more than 1,800 apartment units have been built in combined library-housing developments. These projects not only address local housing needs but…

For those who never experienced this wonder, this was definitely as crazy as it looks.

The bay bridge and golden gate bridge both originally had 6 travel lanes and no shoulder, because that's how you designed roads in the 30's.

Where's the space for the rail line? 😁
trafficfurnitur.bsky.social
I still occasionally call it the Transbay Terminal.

Perhaps you might like the "SF Transit Center".

Not really, the value of a car is much more related to mileage than age.

But I suppose if the TikTok poster wants to say his grocery store trips cost $150 each in order to justify sitting in traffic on 880 instead of taking BART, I guess that's fine.

This is the elevated Adeline/3rd Santa Fe alignment in Oakland, amirite?
trafficfurnitur.bsky.social
Just the capital costs amortized over its mileage lifetime for a below average car will be $9 per trip.

Oh I meant the signal timing. It's kind of magical to just catch every signal through San Pablo, Richmond, and El Cerrito. The signals you miss change in about 15 seconds.

I love TEMPO too. Just wish it didn't stop at so many signals.
trafficfurnitur.bsky.social
Not really. They have advance signals, which slow down everyone for 9 minutes out of 10. And they aren't times (afaict) with approaching buses.
trafficfurnitur.bsky.social
Moving bollards would stop that.
trafficfurnitur.bsky.social
Great now *I* have to think about that

A reminder that Belgium went for almost 2 years without a government as meanwhile the Belgian bureaucracy functioned normally, because it's set up for continuous funding without government involvement. The current shutdown is a feature, not a bug, of our governing traditions.

I might be able to get somewhere with that, but better would be miles/kg or miles/gallon numbers in actual operation, like here:

I ran some numbers on the full fuel cycle of AC Transit's hydrogen and battery bus operations based on numbers in the 2025 Zero Emission Program Annual Progress Report, in order to get an idea of the actual carbon emissions of hydrogen and battery buses in real operation. 🧵

I'm interested to see the hydrogen numbers to calculate the CO2 emissions per seat-mile. Will I be shocked? Unlikely.

I agree. And moreover, I'm gonna hold Caltrans's hand when I say this, but raising the road can happen incrementally.

Some thoughts:
1. transistors (were possible to make in 40's)
2. octane boosters other than tetraethyl-lead
3. any of the replacements for PCBs
4. Thorium salt reactors
5. three-point seat belts
6. electric guitar
7. oral contraceptives
8. SSRIs
9. transit-only lanes
10. ISO 9001

Yet another casualty of the 20 minute frequency. The 7/8 minute split made a lot more sense than the current 6/14 schedule split.

This is a wonderfully well written article about a moment in time that is meaningful and potentially inspiring to people.

I wrote about Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ezra Klein, why swallowing live frogs is a bad idea, and how context and history can release you from bright-kid syndrome, the illusion that you yourself are going to have every answer or fix the world.
You don't have to swallow frogs
Klein and Coates show that if you don't know what your core beliefs are, you're going to get played.
