Well if we have to have tariffs then might as well make up numbers somehow
I had been reluctant to amplify the theory that Trump's "reciprocal tariff rate" for a given country was based on the dumb calculation: (bilateral trade deficit) divided by (imports from that country)

But now USTR has confirmed it. Brief 🧵

Liberation Day? @economist.com says more like Ruination Day
Donald Trump has committed the most profound, harmful and unnecessary economic error in the modern era. Almost everything he said—on history, economics and the technicalities of trade—was utterly deluded econ.st/3YbbFjq

I feel that if, in 2010, you had told me that Citizens United would lead to someone literally giving oversized $1 million checks to voters in exchange for their votes, I would have called you a delusional conspiracy theorist. And I would have been wrong.

The story so far:
Just so we’re all following

1) Elon spends ~$300M to elect Trump

2) Trump gives him the federal government

3) Elon guts the agencies that regulate his companies

4) Trump holds an infomercial for Elon’s cars on the White House lawn

5) Elon gives Trump another $100M

@aoc.bsky.social says: for the budget fight, focus on members in:
- swing seats
- Energy & Commerce
- Ways & Means
This vote was to start the process of the cuts. It WILL come back for a final vote.

There are some chances to slow or potentially stop it. Need constant pressure on GOP

Focus on GOP swing seats & key committees. Energy & Commerce is where the Medicaid fight will go down. Ways&Means for tax fight.
@aoc.bsky.social
Please explain what just happened. Is there no way to stop this w the reconciliation to be used by GOP to get around the filibuster? Are we sunk?

Every time a career lawyer is pushed out, you can assume they were told to do something illegal.
BREAKING — FEMA Acting Chief Counsel Joshua Stanton has been put on administrative leave & walked out of the building after being given the role *just last week*, an agency source tells me.

Previous chief counsel Adrian Sevier had been with FEMA since 2000 and was office's longest-serving chief.

It’s not just the lying - it’s that no one expects to be so consistently, flagrantly, and flexibly lied to. It’s not just lying, it’s using lies as a rhetorical device against the honesty and common decency of most folks
No one's doing this better than JB right now.
Donald Trump is lying to you.

“This is going to be great television”. Who even says that?!? Not a President, surely. Not a President to an ally. Nuff said, I think

The irony of all this strongman posturing while smashing and grabbing is that it leaves the US open to be an easy target for anyone with ill intent, while making enemies of just about everyone.

Or should we assume that was the plan all along?

Gene Hackman was proud of the fact Richard Nixon put him on the "enemies" list and I think we can honor him and whatever joy his career has given you by living our lives in such a way that evil people know our names and think of us as enemies.

Only a bully and and abuser would demand that you lick his boots because you need help and then turn around and kick you in the guts
Lindsey Graham immediately following up an Oval Office meeting at which Trump and Vance disgraced themselves and the United States with a call for Zelenskyy to leave Ukraine's presidency only makes me feel more strongly that this whole event today was pre-planned and in service of Kremlin interests.

I have questions for scholars of conflict, polarisation, and hegemony.

We’ve never managed to heal hate, racism, and supremacy. Recent measures seem to only suppress it, send it underground to simmer until something unleashes it and fans the flames.

What have we learned about what to do?
Wow.

As one German said, "Americans de-Nazified Germany at the end of WWII and now you are re-Nazifying Germany," in response to JD Vance's meeting with the head of the AFD rather than the sitting German Chancellor.

Why is good will dispensable? In the long game of politics, you need friends and more friends than enemies, right? So far, this administration is making enemies on *most* fronts. Is this a deliberate goal to flip the allegiances? To become BRICSA (BRICS + USA)? Surely not just ignorant arrogance?
Sen. Roger Wicker on Hegseth: “He made a rookie mistake in Brussels. I don’t know who wrote the speech — it is the kind of thing Tucker Carlson could have written, and Carlson is a fool."

Take a seat, senator. It's too late for buyer's remorse. You singlehandedly made Secretary Hegseth a reality.
