On 11 September, Transit Committee met with a packed agenda. Councillors express support for reliable service, but continue to fail in providing oversight and understanding the tradeoffs involved in reaching reliable service.

(acknowledging that traffic is lower in the summer, and that seasonal adjustments are necessary to run reliably all year round)

OC Transpo's scheduling system is an outlier. There are efficiencies and service improvements to be found - but that requires a change in how OC Transpo approaches bus scheduling and network design.

Transit Committee met on 12 June for its fourth meeting this year. In the face of far-reaching problems, councilors chose to debate petty matters instead, missing the mark on providing overall guidance and direction to OC Transpo.

BTO is fighting for a transit system that is useful and reliable by focusing on smaller scale projects and changes to internal operations. We support bus lanes on corridors such as Bank St and Carling Ave, and we are working on solving the bus shortage.

Route 11 is a complex service which requires good coordination and management to run reliably. With this in mind, service quality on this route is a good indicator of OC Transpo's abilities overall.

OC Transpo claims that interlining "increase[s] efficiency" and "permits more flexibility," but there's a good reason why their practices are out of line with industry standards.

It's certainly true that the concrete of the system (the train) is oriented towards downtown, but the bus operations are a mess in general and I personally don't feel they orient around peak direction travel so strongly.

YMMV

The choice to cut midday train service to save $1.6 million was the stupidest idea they've had in a while.

But there is more peak service because peak demand is higher and easier to serve with transit. And many people say peak service is indirect, erratic, or infrequent, with no clear reason why.
(chart from the Transport Trends report, which shows double the rate of tripmaking during peak periods compared to the midday)

I do think there are ways that OC can do “more,” starting with their scheduling … the bus fleet deterioration is entirely on council though.

Possibly the 18-22 council. The buses have been ordered now, but the manufacturers have enormous backlog.
