The trade-off might well be worth it—but confiscating billionaire wealth is not a magic bullet to solve U.S. budget problems. Does this mean that the United States shouldn't aggressively tax billionaires? Absolutely not. Let's take a tour through the events from back in the first few months of the year. After taking office, President Donald Trump stepped aside and allowed Elon Musk and the newly created Department of Government Efficiency to run riot in the federal bureaucracy, effectively shuttering entire agencies. While other countries are willing to more aggressively limit free speech, including but not limited to campaign finance restrictions, the First Amendment makes this difficult to impossible in the United States. Instead, Americans must confront the problem of economic inequality and the dire power differentials it enables more directly: by taxing billionaires. And the thing is, taxing billionaires isn't even that bad for billionaires. At that level of wealth, there is nothing material left to buy. The second billion goes not into more consumption but simply purchasing more assets. The marginal value of each new dollar of wealth diminishes almost to zero, except perhaps as a way of keeping score with other billionaires.

The bill he voted against was an amendment to the revenge porn statute which was passed in 2019, before Zohran was in the Assembly. He voted against two amendments. One expanded the scope for prosecution beyond the context of revenge porn to posting crime victim images, in reaction to an EMT who posted images on his social media account of a dead victim at a crime scene. This is problematic on its face because means already exist for civil recourse, and there are potential First Amendment issues by placing it under penal law instead. The other actually weakened the revenge porn law because it removed the ability to prosecute actors who posted revenge porn for reasons of malice or profit. MAMDANI HELD HIS FIRE: Mamdani is no fan of guns. He called for a nationwide ban on assault rifles after the mass shooting in Midtown last week, and posted on X in 2022: "We need to ban all guns." But back in 2021 he was one of only seven Democrats to vote against a bill meant to criminalize ghost guns which passed 106-43. That same day, he was one of just three Democrats to vote against a bill making it illegal to disguise a real gun as a toy. That bill passed 116-33. "Zohran had concerns about language in those specific bills that went beyond gun control measures, and instead focused too heavily on increasing incarceration," a Mamdani campaign spokesperson said, adding that "he proudly voted to ban ghost guns the following year." Sure enough, when a bill was passed in 2022 to clean up some language in the ghost gun bill making it clear that only licensed gunsmiths and firearm dealers were required to put a serial number on guns, Mamdani voted yes - making him the only Democrat to flip his vote from the year before.
