As the winter of my years approaches, like the skalds of old I impart wisdom on the flower of youth.

If you're into fairy folklore and related ephemera, this is an essential reference book. In fact, I just realised my old paperback seems to have disappeared, so that was an easy buy.

A new edition of Katharine Briggs's Dictionary of Fairies was published last month, illustrated by Fee Greening. In tomorrow's online talk, Fee will be in conversation about her illustrations for the book, as well as her other work and influences. 7 Oct, 7pm BST www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/fee-greeni...

Ah! Spielberg's AI (and man, I had to wrack my brains for that one).

High-Rise surely counts but you're right, we've seen very few.

What is surprising is how low the bar is. We thought it'd be some perfect simulation or, at the cruder end, a hot wire twisted into the hypothalamus. Instead it's Disney Princesses with seventeen fingers and Trump as a space marine or some shit.

The exact mechanism and capital's both-boots-in embrace is a bit outside the box, but the ol' electronic lotus eater machine is a well established trope.

But we did see it coming. Fucking WALL-E saw it coming.

This is so sad, and so true already… our end by our own hands in a way we never saw coming.

One of the more incredible stories out of LA this year has been how a taco review blog became the best on-the-ground coverage of ICE raids in the city.

They do a dispatch every day, follow-up on the kidnapped people (which almost no media outlet has done), and fact-check government claims.

@lataco.bsky.social first began as a blog documenting local Mexican cuisine. Now, it’s an essential reporting powerhouse to the city as Trump’s mass deportation plot unfolds.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

For every €1 provided through a Basic Income For Artists pilot program in Ireland, the government got €1.46 back. So it’s being made permanent.

Over and over we see it. It saves public money to provide public housing. And it makes public money to provide basic income.

We can’t afford to NOT do it.

I try not to share too much of this stuff, but this is psychopathic.

President Trump called the deadly U.S. military strikes on boats in the Caribbean Sea “an act of kindness,” claiming that the attacks had halted drug trafficking via those waters into the United States.

I learned about Sports Thumb Jim Gavin dropping out of the Irish Presidential election from @tupped.bsky.social's The Gist this morning and I owe it to you to share this relevant passage, which got my week off to a great start:
The Long Game
Imagine you are a tenant, in the worst financial crash in living memory, and you discover that over three thousand of your very precious and irreplaceable euros have been sent by your idiot bank to your previous landlord.
And then he won't give them back. Not then, but also, not later either.
He just keeps the money, because that is how Irish private landlords behave. You pay a deposit to a landlord and then they try anything on to refuse to give it back.
Now imagine you spend the next 16 years seething every time that landlord appears on the
TV, being fêted for his sporting triumphs, receiving state appointments and still never giving you your money.
And now, and I invite you to imagine this in full 8k Hi-Def Surround Sound, imagine seeing that guy announce he was running to be President and realising you were going to tell your story and End It.
