My former PhD supervisor just recently renounced her US citizenship, and the cost of it all was so stupid high.

Because going straight to citizenship is not an option for us given the visa route we are on. ILR *must* be achieved before citizenship may be applied for.
(And yes, citizenship has its own, separate, and very high application fee as well…)
