And it wouldn't be the end of the world... The Italian HSR service from Turin to Naples currently makes no less than three reversals in Milan, Florence, and Rome, and that didn't impact its success (the one in Florence will be eliminated soon, though).

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. What you describe is how Latin/Greek are taught everywhere these days. But the explicit, outright rejection of fluency ("we only do syntax and morphology and passive reading proficiency is good enough") is a relatively recent development.

Yeah, I mean I had 5 years of Latin and Greek at school, and I totally loved it 🙂

Having said that, Greek lessons gave me the ability to understand nearly all medical terminology without having studied medicine and that's still helpful (weirdly enough, some countries still require knowledge of Latin for med students, which is really nonsensical).

...the contemporary methods, which produce passive reading knowledge of these languages at best, were never intended to only do that. As a cope, proponents of classical languages started to point out the alleged transcendental values of the "systematic study" of Latin/Greek.
January 13, 2026 at 6:24 PM
That's a modern cope, trying to justify how Latin and Greek are taught these days. Historically, all language lessons (even of Latin/Greek) were very much intended to produce fluent speakers, it's just that Latin/Greek teaching got stuck in a 18th/19th century pedagogical framework. In other words..

Even wilder to me: until 2023, you could only study medicine in English. Even now, there are just 2 states that allow classes taught in Hindi.
Now Bihar becomes the second state to offer MBBS course in Hindi, after Madhya Pradesh - The Times of India
News News: Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey on July 2 announced that the students will now be able to study MBBS in Hindi from the upcoming session. The cour

...This is not to say that Schiphol shouldn't have the connections it does, but rather that airports mustn't be taken as representative and that they shouldn't be the focus of transit debates.
January 12, 2026 at 3:01 PM
A bit lateral, but every time the topic comes up, I recommend an old blogpost by Alon Levy: "Airport connectors [...] are overrated: city elites tend to like them disproportionately to their transit usage, as do many urban boosters, who think [of them as] a necessary feature of a great global city."
Airport Connectors
The most interesting transit planner in the world: This principle is true primarily for large international airports. As I will explain, this is less true of smaller airports. But before going on, …

The funniest thing to me is how quickly libertarian ideology among Republicans died.

Disagree on that one. Notably, most exporting jurisdictions shield their own farmers with significant (in many cases: sky-high) tariffs, so it remains debatable/largely unknown how Europeans compare to others in terms of competitiveness. Secondly, GMOs might be a relevant topic when it comes to...

When I think about it: if anything, there is a tendency to raise the reflexive as much as possible. "Gestern hat sich Max gewaschen" sounds slightly smoother, but the deeper position is definitely grammatical, too, and it's possible that said tendency is just some prescriptive idea...
January 10, 2026 at 8:18 AM
No, there is no difference, no semantic nuance in there. Reflexives can't be topicalized. Both positions are "neutral".
January 10, 2026 at 7:37 AM
Not sure, if this helps, but reflexives can always come either in front or after the subject in German (unless the subject is the first word or a pronoun), with no semantical consequences.
"Gestern hat sich Max gewaschen" is equivalent to "Gestern hat Max sich gewaschen".

Austria finished the renovation of its monumental parliament in 2022, spending ~0.5bln €. Political parties had been delaying the renovation for years, fearing a public populist backlash due to the expected exorbitant costs.

Oh okay, umso besser. Dann bin ich anscheinend echt mal auf Level 3 gekommen, denn mindestens 1x in meinem Leben hab ich schon gescannt.
January 5, 2026 at 11:13 AM
January 5, 2026 at 11:09 AM
Level 3 mehrmals täglich? Himmel hilf, was machst du denn da?
