Meet Dr. Laura Lagomarsino, who fell in love with plants during childhood camping trips in California's redwood forests. Her passion for plant-pollinator relationships began with a magical moment watching hummingbirds visit curved flowers in Costa Rica's cloud forests.

Dr. Laura Lagomarsino smiling at the camera while conducting fieldwork in a tropical environment. She wears a colorful striped knit hat with red trim and a light-colored field jacket with yellow straps. Behind her is a distinctive tropical plant with large, paddle-shaped leaves arranged in a rosette pattern, characteristic of high-altitude Andean vegetation.

I’m so proud of my grad student @evoyeyo.bsky.social for defending his @lsubiosci.bsky.social PhD thesis on macroevolution of #Brachyotum and the broader Andean flora today. Felicidades, Dr. Paredes-Burneo!! ⛰️🧬🌻🥳👨🏽‍🎓🇵🇪
Diego and I posing next to each other after his defense in the LSU herbarium. Diego in front of a slide that says “Plant evolution in the Andes is more complex than current phylogenomic models can explain” with lots of pretty plant photos around the text. A celebration in Diego’s honor in the LSU herbarium. Diego, family, me and other close friends celebrate at dinner.

And yes, that first image is Frailejón Ernesto Pérez’s kin. And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re very welcome (I’ve had this cute kid’s song stuck in my head all day 😅):

Parque Nacional Natural Chingaza, one of my happiest places 🇨🇴🌼⛰️❤️.
Close up of a white-wooly frailejon in flower, its yellow compositae inflorescences reaching comically above the plant. Theres a windswept tree in the background. Espeletia grandiflora? A close up of a deep red inflorescence of an Ericaceae, maybe Macleania Landscape image with paramo in the foreground, a lake in the middle and endless mountains beyond. The blue sky is largely clear (where it would normally be cloudy), allowing you to see far into the distance. Cute, Dr Suessy frailejons look like cartoon palms on a hillside. Espeletia uribei?

In FY25, the University of Vermont had 39 H1B beneficiaries approved.

In 2016, I was one of them.

What this country, my adopted country, my child’s country, is doing is monstrous and will have grave repercussions for all Americans well beyond this current presidential term. This is so sad to see.

"For centuries, scientists and sailors have know that sperm whales hunted the 'giant squid', Architeuthis dux. Whale bodies are scarred with huge sucked marks and gashes from Archituthus. But the battles take place in deep water, far beyond where humans can easily travel…"

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

What is the longest anything has ever sat in your brain's "I should look that up on the internet" queue?

In like 2006 my MS advisor showed me this book, and ever since I have periodically been like "what was the name of that book again? I should figure that out and get a copy"

Oooof. I didn't see anything disturbing, per se, either, but the prime Harvard Square real estate with fancy furnishings (despite being largely empty when I visited) was bizarrely opulent and disconnected, especially/even when constrasted with the other very nice labs in the department..

That place-- the Center for Evolutionary Dynamics-- always gave me exactly the wrong vibes. Hard pass from me.

I also looked up Nowak in the Epstein book. He lists himself with "Epstein Institute, Harvard" as his affiliation. (No Epstein institute exists).
Epstein donated millions to Nowak over the years which funded Nowak's Program for Evolutionary Dynamics.
Screenshot of first page of Martin Nowak's entry to the Epstein birthday book. The title is "The mathematics of life", the second line reads "Martin Nowak", third line: "Epstein Institute, Harvard University. The 4th line and further is about science / genetics/ evolution.
