“My worry is that ejecting Musk from the Royal Society would be seen as a political move.”

My worry is that the @royalsociety.org makes the scientific community look like a bunch of pathetic pushovers!

Are you for science or against it? It's as simple as that.

Well, SA was an organisation of the Nazi Party. ICE is part of the US government (not the GOP). That's a principal difference.

Alrighty. Anyway, it's all functions. But there are different kinds of functions. This special composition thing is one of them.

As in.. parts composing a whole or what?

Hmm.. there should definitely be a band called The Frequentists too.

Hah, I've been thinking of putting together a band of academics and calling it The Outliers.

What's "the special composition question"?

We should let go of this metaphysical notion (dream) that we call "explanation". All there is (we have?) are functions.

Ozzy describes being addicted to @itspetergabriel.bsky.social's So. A testament to how powerful that album is, a masterpiece of masterpieces. And later he described how he was starstruck by Phil Collins. A testament to the brilliance of @worldofgenesis.bsky.social.

Subtle topic! I'm definitely not against peer-review. But I do think that the *current system (or state of it) is the source of the stagnation we now observe in science. The system needs to be more relaxed. We are now weeding out variation - leading to throwing out the seeds of genuinely new ideas.

Of course, before we ask for remedies, we would need a diagnosis. I do think peer-review - too much control - is the ultimate problem. My suggestion (for journals):
- no lower than 20-30% acceptance rates
- investing in editing (facilitating the above); basically new academic jobs (academic editor)

But surely that can only work as a part of a set of more fundamental changes (and it has clear problems, eg research grants typically last less than 5yrs)? I think that the root of the problem is too strict peer-review culture: it leads to averaging the outputs; it works against producing novelties.

An excellent piece! And it fits all of academia, not just neuroscience. I'd say the beef is below: the focus in the academia (both research & teaching) is on short-term (rather bureaucratic) goals, not on genuine advancement of knowledge. But I wonder: do you have suggestions for concrete changes?

"There’s too much focus on producing 'products' like PhD theses and publications, and not enough focus on expanding the boundaries of human knowledge and wisdom. Funding agencies claim they want to fund novel and innovative research, but will only fund predictable incremental research".

It looks like the Wikipedia page for Mary Brunkow got created literally just this morning, after her Nobel Prize was announced. I had heard that women in academia tend to be somewhat under-represented on Wikipedia, but this is a particularly stark example.
