i think often about the theology of the VERY early Christian church, e.g. the desert fathers, and the extent to which they equate God's presence with community bonds, support, and hospitality to strangers

also even abusers and rapists and murderers deserve to have someone keeping the system honest when it has the power to kill you or completely ruin your life. like the idea that the guilty are an exception to that rule is one of the mostly subtly poisonous ideas in American culture
