There’s a phrase about US foreign policy establishment (Rash’s specialty) called “the blob,” sort of a both-parties-gonna-status-quo-regardless. In Minnesota media, the commentariat blob really isn’t gonna truly consider the legit reasons Fateh won or (even more so) Frey lost. They just ignore it.

That’s why they would rather turn to actual republicans for a coalition than the progressive side of their own party. Republicans have no shot at disrupting the historic power balance of this city. Progressive DFLers do.

In Minneapolis, this isn’t the reality. Whoever gets the DFL nomination, there won’t be a Republican elected in this city. Progressive candidates are viable options. I think those two things scare the hell out of “moderate” DFLers that are used to getting their way on national and statewide levels.

In the last three presidential elections, I voted for the democrat even though I disliked and even despised their politics in some cases. My 2024 vote was the most shameful given his facilitation of the genocide in Gaza. But each time, the facist specter of trump hung on the other side. I relented.

I believe the reason that conservative (“moderate”) members of the Minneapolis DFL are so disturbed by the prevalence of progressive members of their party is that, unlike in the national political environment, they have no real Republican boogeyman to use as a tool to whip progressives into shape.
