One thing I’m noticing in this era is that people are starting to lose their grip on the basic precepts of rule of law, even on basic civil contracting stuff. You can’t just do what you want without consequences without all sorts of other stuff unravelling.

There’s a big mental shift coming for Canadians, to the assumption “water is plentiful”. Between reduced snow pack melt, erratic rains, more water holding capacity in warmer air, and longer summers drying everything out, water simply will not be as plentiful as it was anymore.

This is really significant. I've been frustrated that we have to guess how much power and water AI consumes, because these tech companies won't say (even though they know). This is the most transparent estimate from one of these companies so far. I hope others will follow suit.

In recognition of us doing fuck all to reduce emissions, let me remind y'all that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is useless unless we decarbonize drastically.

Carbon dioxide removal is not a current climate solution — we need to change the narrative
Drastically reduce emissions first, or carbon dioxide removal will be next to useless.

From a US perspective, this is fundamentally worse than Sputnik, and it is having the exact opposite and wrong reaction to 1957 - retreat, shutting down basic science and clean tech commercialization, instead of diving into creating a national science complex and building fast.
