Energy policy is not climate policy. The imaginarium of denial that Labor and industry have constructed and which Speers et al dutifully operate within avoids their confronting two policy 🐘: all fossil carbon mining contributes to climate change and carbon offsetting/capture, both 🌳 & 🏭, isn’t real.

Yet empirical studies keep the notion alive. Let’s think science in the large: we were able to evolve as an intelligent(?) species because, absent external forcing, the biological cycle kept atmospheric carbon stable. So why would it mop up fossil carbon? Offsetting is magical thinking not science.

They've gotten scammed by bad actors into believing Trump's 2024 win represented something seismic and even permanent. I predict they'll look back on this as a serious error.

The number of scientifically trained people who went down this magical thinking path is kinda depressing. Just their failure to comprehend the basic maths is gobsmacking. I don’t have a lot of sympathy. Mostly they were looking for an easy way out and/or some sweet fossil carbon funded grants.

Kinda think articles like this keep offsets alive by leaning into empirics over scientific principles. Science says offsets can’t be fixed because the theoretical foundations are bogus. Empiricism implies a theoretical foundation. It’s like doing endless ecological fieldwork to count 🦄.
