Nobody’s saying you can’t enjoy A:TLA or even any of its ancillary material but the way it’s portrayed as the “high art” of children’s media if anything has insulated it even better against criticism of nostalgia.

I try to be optimistic about human nature and insist that our best impulses are twisted by capital but the way people continue to retreat into familiar fantasy is the biggest challenge I’ve encountered to my beliefs. Sometimes I have to wonder if we all just want bad art.

As usual, capitalism is the one economic system on earth where automation is a bad thing. Everywhere else, if we get told there's a robot who can write all our emails for us, we get to say "sweet! Nobody liked that shit and nobody has to do it anymore!" But here we all tied our livelihoods to it.
