A girl with a muzzle she wore as armour, as protection against the world. a breed unknown, tied too long to a tree. And I believed her. Not because I understood— but because something in me lifted its head, ears pricked to her gentle advances. And so I relented. Yes—gladly I would walk her home tonight. I unclip her collar and lead her to my den, my bed, to my soft hollowed altar where mere human words are no longer needed or said. With care I lay her beside me. Her shoulders pinch with the fear of being too much, too wild, too creaturely. Yet when her head rests on my chest, I feel the slow discarding of distrust, the knot inside loosening… her breath hitching itself back into rhythm. We begin. “Let me in,” she whines—not begging, but claiming. Saying, I have carried myself this far without breaking, and here, maybe, I may rest and simply be. So I let her explore the softest parts of me— places no human heart could understand, let alone see. I open up with slow assent and let her step through— paws first, heartbeat trembling, aching— the rolling sea inside her quieting under my touch. A girl who learned to snarl only to keep her world from falling apart. She noses my hands as though learning me by scent, mapping the lines of my palms to be sure she will be gently met. Hot breath on my neck, hot want between my legs. I shed what remains of me as we descend… I offer up to her all my consent. She asks nothing wrought of me, nothing that I cannot give. Only that she may be my dog tonight— So that for once we may truthfully breathe So I reveal my childhood self— I come again and again—like it is my first time… with small nudges of affection, with the leaning weight that says you belong, with the quiet, steady presence that never pushes her nose away— that says, you are not wrong, you are not lost. And I find myself opening more. Opening to what is curled beneath her fur, the one who longs to love without fear. Opening to this strange, carnal, holy thing that happens when two lights— a universe apart— Decide not to hide but guide each other deep within. In her storm-grey, hopeful eyes there is no threat— only recognition. Her consciousness presses into mine, into every atom of our unlikely song. I stroke the nape of her neck to let her know I see the ache of her waiting, wanting patiently— to be touched, cared, without explanation. And I hold her—inside me—for an eternity, gentle and certain. I become her calming sea until her shaking breaks and eases. I let her wash over me. I am no longer that child suddenly grown, sobbing, I allow myself to be seen until the knot inside me opens, breathes, loosens. And in that wordless place between us, a shared instinct stirs— a promise, a belonging. A soft, ancient love whispered through two bodies. A door opening inward to the place where sinew and bone remember their truest shapes. THAT LIGHT INSIDE YOU That “hole” we sometimes feel in the center of us? It isn’t emptiness. It’s a light. A core. It’s what remains when every human costume forced upon us has been smashed off the floor — the pulse that refuses to die even when we forget how to listen for it. It’s a tiny space… that’s why it often feels: quiet, unreachable, hidden beneath trauma, scar tissue or silence. But it’s never truly gone. We may meet creatures who tell us they’ve felt distant from their creaturely and animal selves; that their connection used to burn brighter, but now it flickers. I want to remind you — as the elder wolf at the table, (tending her own light) — in the midst of everything terrible and wonderful — flickering is still fire. The disconnection isn’t a failure; it’s a season. The creature self can go underground like hibernation. The light doesn’t vanish; it waits. You can’t force it open with willpower or rationalise it into the open. You reach it by remembering softness — the warmth of breath, the weight of fur — imagined or real — the rhythm that existed before words before human thought before guilt and shame. There were times I thought I’d lost my light too — when the world grew so impossibly loud in my head and the human masks became too heavy to lift. But every time I’ve fallen quiet enough, the light has stirred, and I’ve known she was still there: the creaturely ember that endures even when the rest of me forgets how to howl. If you feel nothing right now, that’s OK! The light doesn’t demand anything; it simply is. Touch the earth. Breathe. Feel the wind move across your skin. Cry, bark, purr, shout, weep. Creature will feel it. It always does. That light was never a hole to fill — it is the part of us that remembers what we truly are: whole, creatures of light and love, wild, beautiful and free — waiting to be met again. Lulu the rubber shinx has bubbled to the surface. in a final, wide picture, Lulu is on all fours, crawling into the waiting arms of her girlfriend. Her tail is wagging happily, and she's nuzzling her girlfriend affectionately. "Hiii Lulu!! Pfttt, sweet toy! So happy to see me, with those pretty printed-on eyes... I missed you!! Now let's go get maddie's discord status updated, shall we?" The girl is sleeping, and the rubber shinx is awake and eager to play!!
