if you are old enough to attend a university, you are old enough to be held accountable - by your peers, your instructors, and future employers - for your poor character. i would not hire this person in the future for any position upon a cursory google search, and no one else should, either

Right? I'm not going to pretend I never pirated things when I was younger and much poorer. One thing I didn't do though was convince myself that it was virtuous. I try to make up for it now by paying for things that I didn't pay for in the past. It's not an unrecoverable moral failing but it's bad

The whole entitlement to piracy thing always rubbed me the wrong way. I know it's an expression of frustration against exploitative corps, but it also enables exactly this behavior. If you don't want to pay for it, just move on. Don't pretend you're doing society a service by stealing it.
